 Archibald Hill Summary
In 1920 Hill became Brackenbury professor of physiology in the University of Manchester and in 1923 Jodrell professor of physiology at University College, London.
Hill theorized that since the heat produced by the two phases of muscular contraction was not enough to eliminate all the lactic acid, it probably changed back to its precursor.
Archibald Vivian Hill CH CBE FRS (September 26, 1886 – June 3, 1977) was an English physiologist, one of the founders of the diverse disciplines of biophysics and operations research.

Hill's early experiments researched the effects of electrical stimulation on nerve function, the mechanical efficiency of muscle, energy processes in muscle during recovery, the interaction between oxygen and hemoglobin, and quantitative aspects of drug kinetics on muscle.
Hill combined aspects of physics and biology, a discipline which he championed as biophysics (Hill, 1931).

 Memorial Resolution-Archibald A. Hill
ARCHIBALD A. When Archibald Anderson Hill died on March 29, 1992, in Austin, we lost one more of that dwindling number of linguists who had been present at the creation in the 1930s of modern American linguistics.
Hill's first academic appointment was as instructor of English at the University of Michigan in 1926 (he became assistant professor three years later).
Such events now make Hill's linguistic approach to literary texts seem of a certain period, especially in its assumption that the determinate meaning of a poem can be established with the same precision and general acceptance as the identification of phonemes like /p/ and /f/.

Archibald Vivian Hill was born in Bristol on September 26,1886.
During his initial studies Hill made use of the Blix' apparatus, obtaining his first knowledge of the subject from papers of this Swedish physiologist.
In 1920 Hill was appointed Brackenburg Professor of Physiology at Manchester University; there he continued the work on muscular activity and began to apply the results obtained on isolated muscles to the case of muscular exercise in man. From 1923 to 1925 he became Jodrell Professor of Physiology at University College, London, succeeding E.H. Starling.

 Archibald Vivian Hill
At the University of Cambridge (1911-14) Hill began his investigations of the physiological thermodynamics of muscle and nerve tissue.
Working with a straplike thigh muscle in the frog, he was able to demonstrate that oxygen is needed only for the recovery, not the contractile, phase of muscular activity, laying the foundation for the discovery of the series of biochemical reactions carried out in muscle cells that results in contraction.
Hill also derived a mathematical expression--known as the "Hill equation"--for the uptake of oxygen by hemoglobin.

Hill was born on in Bristol and educated at Cambridge.
To record minute heat changes, Hill modified delicate thermocouples, and discovered by 1913 that contracting muscle fibres produce heat in two phases.
Hill also showed that molecular oxygen is consumed after the work of the muscles is over but not during muscular contraction.

 Happy Birthday by traditional Songfacts
The Hill sisters were not compensated for use of "Happy Birthday To You," so their other sister Jessica filed suit to prove that "Happy Birthday To You" was their song with different lyrics.
The court agreed and gave the Hill sisters the copyright to "Happy Birthday To You" in 1934, which meant that anytime it was used in a movie, radio program, or other performance, the Mildred and Patty Hill were compensated.
Both Hill sisters died unmarried and childless, so their share of the royalties have presumably been going to charity or to nephew Archibald Hill ever since Patty Hill passed away in 1946.

Two researchers at Cambridge University in United Kingdom confirmed that lactic acid is formed when muscles contract and Otto Meyerhof of Germany showed that this lactic acid is a breakdown product of glycogen, the animal starch stored all over the body, particularly in liver, kidneys and muscles.
When Professor Archibald Hill of the University College of London demonstrated that conversion of glycogen to lactic acid partly accounts for heat produced during muscle contraction everybody assumed that glycogen was the inogen.
And, the 1922 Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology was divided between Hill and Meyerhof.
