Wavell attended Winchester College and Sandhurst Military Academy.
He fought in the second Boer War, World War I, and World War II, when he served as Commander of British forces in the Middle East until he was replaced by Claude Auchinleck in 1941.
In 1943, Wavell was named Viceroy of India,l again being replaced in his military post by Auchinleck, until shortly before Indian independence was realised in 1947.
