Reiss suggested that this pattern is supported by the fact that many Jews of Salonica had Italian names because they had initially fled from the Iberian Peninsula to Italy, only to be ousted by the Inquisition when it arrived there several decades later.
However, Reiss suggests that because Sephardim do in fact pronounce the 'ayin' very subtly, a bit like a hard "h" made far back in the throat, the possibility that could be transliterated as 'Nahar" seems plausible; however, I have yet to come across any examples where this is the case.
However, Reiss suggests a more plausible answer: under the Ottoman Empire, Turkish, the language spoken in Salonica, was written using the Arabic alphabet.

After Reiss held to make it 5-5 in the first set, Moore held, too, closing out the game with an ace and broke to take the set.
Second-seeded Singer and Archibald advanced by defeating Cory Parr and Ryan Tolkin of Jericho (Section 8) in the quarterfinal round 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Srebrenica: Executions and Mass Murders | Carl Savich | Columns | serbianna.com
Swiss criminologist and forensic pioneer Rodolphe Archibald Reiss investigated Austro-Hungarian atrocities and war crimes against the Serbian population, which he published in Report upon the Atrocities Committed by Austro-Hungarian Army in 1916.
The evidence shows that the murders of the Serbian civilian population in Bosnia and in Serbia were part of a planned and systematic policy of genocide by the Austro-Hungarian government.
Reiss found that the massacres and “the butchery of the population was systematic and according to how the men were systematically trained and prepared.” He found that a pamphlet was issued by the Austro-Hungarian high command, and which he found in the possession of the troops.

When the Serbian resistance to Austro- Hungarian imperialism was expressed by the Bosnian Serb who assassinated Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo, Austria invaded Serbia and carried out the most appalling massacres of civilians, before being driven back by a strong Serb army.
Those massacres were investigated by a Swiss doctor Professor Archibald Reiss, the then leading world expert on forensic pathology who wrote that their troops' "brutality would dog Austria Hungary for all time".
Today of course Al Qaeda-linked Muslim terrorists (initially financed by the USA in their Afghan war against the Soviet Union!) in Bosnia and Albania together with Catholic Croats have driven out one million Orthodox Serbs from Croatia, Kosovo and Bosnia.

Serbian suffering in World war One
Starting on page 143 of the chapter "Massacres of Civilians" Professor Reiss gives summary tables (with numbers) of how many men/women were shot vs. killed with knives vs. hanged, disembowelled, burned alive, had their nose, eyes, ears, arms, legs, breasts,...
Reiss reminds the reader that Austro-Hungary had signed article 50 of the Hague Convention of October 18, 1907 which stipulates: "No collective punishment, pecuniary or otherwise, may be pronounced upon the population on account of the acts of individuals for which the population cannot be held collectively responsible."
The war had cost Serbia 23 percent of its population.
