Yell was known as a violent man and engaged in several duels and brawls.
Yell arrived in Washington DC in the fall of 1836 at the end of the session of the twenty-fourth Congress.
Yell was back in the twenty-ninth Congress at the onset of the Mexican War in 1846, but with Polk’s call for troops, he returned to Arkansas to enroll as a private in Captain Solon Borland’s company of Arkansas volunteers.

Before the Arkansas Regiment left Little Rock, Congressman Archibald Yell, a close friend of President Polk, joined the ranks as a private although he aspired to be colonel.
A Little Rock newspaper noted that Yell was "baking bread, wearing old hats, footing it through mud" with the privates when he should be serving in Congress.
At the July 4, 1846 election of officers at Washington, Arkansas, Yell was elected colonel, but suffered criticism for his lack of military bearing.

Archibald Yell (9 August 1797 North Carolina –23 February 1847 Battle of Buena Vista) as a youth served in the War of 1812 and it was here that he met and became a special friend of future President Andrew Jackson.
Yell was later a member of the United States House of Representatives, Governor of the State of Arkansas, and a Brigadier General in the United States Army serving in the Mexican War.
Archibald Yell was born in North Carolina, but moved to Tennessee with his parents, as a child.

Archibald Yell, soldier, congressman, and governor of Arkansas, was born in Jefferson County, Tennessee, on August 9, 1797 (according to most sources), the son of Moses and Jane (Curry) Yell.
Yell is reputed to have been as fearless on the bench as on the field of battle.
Archibald Yell was first buried on the field at Buena Vista, but within a few months his body was disinterred and returned to Arkansas for burial at the Waxhaws Cemetery in Fayetteville.
