Biography - Archie Shepp - Jazz Musician - Saxophone - Piano - Voice - Composition
Archie Shepp is a New York City native and alumnus of Goddard College.
Archie started playing jazz in the early 60's and continues to dazzle audiences around the world playing tenor saxophone and piano, accompanied by his soulful voice.
As a spokesperson for this new music Shepp proved to be intelligent, educated, forceful and controversial.

Shepp is not standing in a relaxed way, he seems ungainly, makes for his chair real slow as if he were 10 years older.
Shepp plays along with her whenever she is singing, he leaves her little space, his lines are not those of mutual love.
Archie reacts, a beady glance and he sounds into the piano space from the middle 8 bars giving the last 16 bars to the fine bassist.

But in the '70s, Shepp employed a fatback/swing-based R&B approach, and in the '80s he mixed straight bebop, ballads, and blues pieces displaying little of the fury and fire from his earlier days.
Shepp turned to academia in the late '60s, teaching at SUNY in Buffalo, then the University of Massachusetts.
Shepp toured and recorded extensively in Europe during the '80s, cutting some fine albums with Horace Parlan, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and Jasper van't Hof.

Amazon.com: Four for Trane: Music: Archie Shepp   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Archie Shepp's first major outing was recorded in August 1964 about a year before John Coltrane gathered some of these same players (Shepp and alto saxophonist John Tchicai) in the studio for the recording of Ascension, which would launch the final phase of his career, represented excellently on the two-CD Major Works collection.
Shepps playing here is brilliant; his tone isn't so big and dramatic (or as brutal)as it became on later albums, instead he focuses on raw, very bluesy, short, broken phrases with a saxophone sound not so different from the swing-players of the 30's like Ben Webster.
Archie Shepp is more famously known for his Fire Music (Impulse!, 1965), his avant-garde antics at the Village Vanguard in the mid-1960s and for his work with Cotrane in the same period, than for Four For Trane, his first recording on the Impulse!

Archie Shepp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is best known for his passionately Afrocentric music of the late sixties which focused on highlighting the injustices faced by the African race, as well as for his work with the New York Contemporary Five and his collaborations with his "New Thing" contemporaries, most notably Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane.
Shepp appeared on Air, The World Of Cecil Taylor and Cell Walk For Celeste, all of which remain defining Taylor recordings.
At this time, many African-American jazzmen were becoming increasingly aware of Afrocentrism and the musical traditions of the African continent; along with Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp was at the forefront of this movement.

ARCHIE SHEPP QUARTET, PART 1 recommended cd collection, cd review and cd details.
TDK continue their much lauded series of jazz issues with another truly great figure of the 1960s jazz movement, Archie Shepp, described by the legendary jazz pianist Mal Waldron as "one of the truly great saxophonists of our time".
Archie Shepp was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on May 24th, 1937.
Evolving his own unique musical style incorporating - often unintentional - squeaks and grunts, Shepp was at the forefront of jazz's 'Avant Garde' movement in the sixties, and although his music often has a strongly political bent, it is less abstract than that of his contemporaries (he described himself as "a sentimentalist, not a romantic").

Shepp's recording was a reverential interpretation of four Coltrane compositions with one Shepp original.
Archie Shepp interprets four of Coltrane's compositions from his Atlantic period, brilliantly arranging and reconfiguring them for a masterful four-piece horn section: Shepp on tenor, John Tchicai on alto, the obscure but talented Alan Shorter (older brother of Wayne) on trumpet, and Roswell Rudd on trombone.
Shepp's playing here is some of his best, with his Ben Webster-through-a-kaleidoscope approach really emerging to lead the ensemble.

 Tenorman Archie Shepp
Tenorman Archie Shepp was born in Florida, 1937, and made his earliest recordings with Cecil Taylor (Air and Into The Bot) sounding at that time, 1960, like an amalgam of Rollins and Coltrane.
Recent Shepp re-leases from Europe reveal him to be in great form, and his current group, Charles Greenlea trombone, Dave Burrell piano, Cameron Brown bass and the habitual Beaver Harris on drums, played a magnificent set at the Massy Festival (Shepp A Massy).
Archie Shepp's piano playing is interesting, his soprano leaner than his tenor, which remains one of the most commanding sounds in jazz.

Archie Shepp - The Impulse Story - Impulse! Records
Shepp also provided listeners with the gift of allowing us to hear and appreciate under-recorded and under-recognized masters such as Ted Curson, Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd and others who might have achieved their deserved greater acclaim with more sessions.
Archie Shepp's greatest contribution to jazz will probably remain his political and social material, along with his penchant for never standing still during his Impulse years.
That Shepp could so fully capture the "state of Black America"and meld modern music with jazz and modern society in one track is a testament to his greatness.

Part of playing the blues is paying your dues and even a cursory glance at Archie Shepp's discography reveals a man who has definitely done his time in the jazz trenches.
Shepp fits right in too and the four converge on a program of originals with the uniform theme of bassist Fred Hopkins' life and recent passing in mind.
Shepp's raspy tenor has rarely sounded so elegiac as atop the gentle fragility conjured by the Trio's rhythmic support as the piece builds into a fitting eulogy.

Many are perfectly comfortable marching down memory lane, locked in Ellingtonian half step, but the upheaval of the Sixties pulled jazz along for the ride, and a handful of avant-gardist torchbearers blazed trails the world has all but forgotten.
Shepp's like-minded trio takes brilliant turns, Richard Davis' walking bass often the saxophonist's sole accompaniment.
Shepp rises above his rhythm section's challenge; his tone sounds more vibrant and pointed than it has in years.
