Archive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Archives are sometimes personal but usually belong to large organizations such as firms and governments.
Archives are distinct from libraries insofar as archives are collections of unique documents whose meaning is derived from their interrelatedness.
Archives were well developed by the ancient Chinese, the ancient Greeks and many other peoples including the Aboriginal Australians, whose immensely intricate archives were stored and transmitted orally but with reference markers in the physical landscape.

Archive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
An archive is a collection of records, charters and other documents belonging to any state, community or family, and the building(s) it's kept in.
A library can be seen as a sort of archive (as can a museum), but the word 'archive' is often used when stressing its role of preservation, rather than that of dissemination.
The word archive (pronounced Ar-kive) is derived from the Greek arkhé meaning government, indicating its importance in the continued life of a community.

Nevertheless, software for creating archives, or extracting files from archives, in the format common to one operating system can often be found on other operating systems.
For this reason, it is common for archive formats to include an indigenous compression method; that is, the archive is always compressed, as a matter of course.
Software supporting the archive format automatically handles the compression and decompression; the user is generally unaware that the archive has been compressed.

 Archive file formats and archivers
Archives are useful when transfering or creating a backup copy of a set of files.
Most of the time, the archiver even had the same name as the file format, and that name also was the file extension: tar, (pk)zip, rar, arj.
As an example, a tar archive of many smaller files compressed with gzip is typically compressed better than a zip file with the same entries, although both use the Deflate algorithm.

Keys to the kingdom - Penn Printout, Feb 95
The most popular file formats are archive formats, which are designed to maintain some external features of a collection of files, most often their placement in a directory structure.
PC and Macintosh archives are typically generated by an archive program that supports compression, so although in the general case they need not be compressed, they almost always are.
Although the range of file formats is vast, and their abilities to compress files vary substantially, in reality there are only a handful of file formats that predominate at any given time.

 Best Archive Tool - DonationCoder.com
There are numerous formats (compression algorithms) that have been written over the last three decades, but the three most popular today on the Windows platform are ZIP (by far the most common), RAR (gaining popularity), and the relatively new 7z, which addresses some of ZIP's weaknesses and limitations and aims to succeed ZIP.
Thus the criticism most often heard of 7z format is that while it provides good compression of multimedia and photo files, it is weak when compressing text/xml/html/ini files, and moreover, its slow compression speed (in PowerArchiver, archiving large files using 7z format is often so slow that it could be considered useless for large files).
Notwithstanding the variety of formats employed among these archivers, the most striking thing about their performance is not their differences but their similarity: our characterizations of each are colored by a desire to want to like every program we encountered, but disappointment among them eventually became monotonous.

 GNU Binary Utilities: ar
An archive is a single file holding a collection of other files in a structure that makes it possible to retrieve the original individual files (called members of the archive).
If it exists, the limit is often 15 characters (typical of formats related to a.out) or 16 characters (typical of formats related to coff).
An archive with such an index speeds up linking to the library, and allows routines in the library to call each other without regard to their placement in the archive.
