The 1998 annual conference of the Archives and Records Association of New Zealand for the first time openly debated its two-year campaign to stop the merger of the National Archives of New Zealand with a Government business unit, the Heritage Group.
He spoke of the review of the Australian Archives Act, 1983, by the Australian Law Reform Commission which saw the primary job of the National Archives of Australia as guaranteeing the integrity of the country’s records system from the cradle to the grave.
The department was preparing proposals for the National Archives to become a separate entity, like the National Museum of New Zealand, and hoped to have is recommendations ready for the Government by the end of November.

 NZDF - Personnel Archives
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Personnel Archives at Trentham Military Camp is the repository for some 1.5 million personnel files relating to 420,000 NZ service personnel who have served in the Defence Forces from 1899 to the present day.
In acknowledging the historical value of these files the Chief of Defence Force and the Chief Archivist of Archives New Zealand have recently signed an agreement to transfer all files of personnel who served in the New Zealand forces up to and including 31 December 1920 into the permanent care of Archives New Zealand.
This means that enquirers who have formerly requested information on these files from the NZDF will in future need to redirect their requests to Archives New Zealand.
