Archivist of the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Archivist of the United States is the chief official overseeing the operation of the National Archives and Records Administration.
The first Archivist, R.D.W. Connor, began serving in 1934, when the National Archive was established by Congress.
The Archivists served as subordinate officials in other government agencies until the National Archives and Records Administration became an independent agency on April 1, 1985.

Archivists are also guided by a code of ethics.
Archivists work for a variety of organizations, including government agencies, museums, historical societies, corporations, colleges and universities, and any institution whose records may potentially be valuable to researchers, exhibitors, genealogists, or others.

Archivists select records, a process that requires an understanding of the historical context in which the records were created, the uses for which they were intended, and their relationships to other sources.
The archivist then arranges and describes the records, in accordance with accepted standards and practices; ensures the long-term preservation of collections; assists researchers; and plans and directs exhibitions, publications, and other outreach programs to broaden the use of collections and to enlist support for archival programs.
The records manager and the archivist are also closely allied; however, the records manager controls vast quantities of institutional records, most of which will eventually be destroyed, while the archivist is concerned with relatively small quantities of records deemed important enough to be retained for an extended period.

 Archivists, curators, and museum technicians
Although some duties of archivists and curators are similar, the types of items they deal with differ: curators usually handle objects with cultural, biological, or historical significance, such as sculptures, textiles, and paintings, while archivists handle mainly records and documents that are retained because of their importance and potential value in the future.
Archivists need research and analytical ability to understand the content of documents and the context in which they were created and to decipher deteriorated or poor-quality printed matter, handwritten manuscripts, photographs, or films.
The skills that archivists, curators, and museum technicians use in preserving, organizing, and displaying objects or information of historical interest are shared by artists and related workers; librarians; and anthropologists and archeologists, historians, and other social scientists.

The Archivist has acknowledged that GRS 20 is a flawed policy, but has indefinitely postponed action to correct the failure of these regulations to incorporate the archival values that the Archivist is charged by statute to defend.
The Archivist should abandon the flawed policy reflected in GRS 20 and, instead, require that the electronic records that are most likely to be worthy of preservation be separately scheduled and appraised so that, where appropriate, such records can be preserved in their electronic form.
This requirement, explicitly announced by the Archivist's lawyers during the course of the appellate proceedings, was critical to the Court of Appeal's decision to uphold the regulation.
