	Archivolt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		An archivolt is a group of mouldings (or other elements) surrounding an arched opening, corresponding to the architrave in the case of a rectangular opening.
		Apart from the decoration, the word sometimes refers to the under-side or inner curve of the arch itself (more properly, the intrados).

		The 1982 survey didn’t offer a valid support for this purpose, since the intrados view are mainly projections of the archivolt of a very low readability and where it mostly seems that some of the joint connections were not documented.
		The 1982 survey has been used, as in other occasion during this work, to gather the global dimensions: the bridge thickness, which has been evaluated to be almost constant, or at least, being the representation scale 1:50 it couldn’t be possible to determine any remarkable difference or variation along the whole vault.

		The book by Jean Villette is a useful guide to much of the iconography of the Chartres sculpture (although not accompanied by brilliant photographs), but as I said, there is still much that is not inconclusively identified.
		The two Zodiac signs, I believe, are "left over" from the archivolts of the left portal, although attempts, unconvincing to me, have been made to relate them iconographically to the Liberal Arts.
