This is the most enjoyable review I've done in a long time--not only because Archon Ultra is great but also because it gave me an excuse to drag my dust-covered Commodore 64 out of the closet and boot up my ten-year-old copy of the original Archon.
While Archon Ultra naturally has a one-player mode, the computer opponent isn't too bright, and it's not much fun playing such a predictable opponent.
Archon Ultra's graphics and animation are topnotch, but the sound support is annoyingly lacking.

In fact, the developers, Freefall, tried their own update for the PC called Archon Ultra in 1994 on DOS, but despite some potential, it too failed in the gameplay department.
Finally, of the offshoots and planned remakes, there was even one in development that was supposed to be based off the old 8-bit code and had the blessing of John Freeman himself, but was sadly never finished.

Yes, the battle is indeed pretty similar to that of Archon (albeit the lack of the animation in melee - for example, swords - attack is pretty ugly - even the 8-bit version was better at this).

It was one of those perfect games - it had the familiarity of chess, the delight of Harryhausen movies, and the unpredictability of the computerized board (whose ebb and flow affected the tide of a match), and a killer 2-player option (*3).
While Archon became an instant classic on many 8-bits (including Japanese micros) after its release in '83, it really was a title cut out for an earlier favorite platform of EOA's: the Atari 8-bits, with its variable color luminance (still a rare gift today) and Player-Missile Graphics (simple sprites).
Perhaps because of EOA's early involvement in the Amiga's development (when the OS specs were still in motion), or because of their deep knowledge of the machine, or perhaps a bit of both?...
