Topic: Archonta

Human Biology: Book reviews -- Primates and Their Relatives in Phylogenetic Perspective edited by Ross D. E. MacPhee   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
It is particularly concerned with whether the mammalian superorder Archonta (primates, tree shrews, bats, colugos--i.e., gliding lemurs--and plesiadapiforms) is a valid taxon.
The ontogeny of the tympanic floor and roof of recent archontans is not distinctive.
If euprimates are removed from the Archonta, however, they share "entotympanics that form in relationship to the tubal cartilage, tegmen tympani, internal carotid artery (and nerve) and greater petrosal nerve." Euprimates show the greatest affinities to scandentians.

 Molecular Systematics
Determining the sister-group relationships of Primates, Dermoptera, Scandentia (Euarchonta), Rodentia and Lagomorpha (Glires) are the two initial priorities of this project.
Archonta was proposed by Gregory to contain a Primates/Scandentia (tree shrews) clade sister to a Chiroptera (bats)/Dermoptera (colugos) clade.
Archonta is maintained in most morphological and paleontological studies of eutherian relationships, although the sister group relationship of Primates and Scandentia is disputed.

Mammalian paleontology, with an emphasis on primates and relatives, marsupials, and a number of other mammalian groups; evolutionary morphology, particularly in making connections between naturalistic behavior and functional anatomy; evolutionary theory and systematics.
Currently I am engaged in a number of independent and cooperative projects that deal with: an examination of macroevolutionary analysis; morphological evidence of various primate relatives, the Archonta; of various European fossil ãedentates;ä and the description of new collections of Paleocene marsupial and Cretaceous therian mammal postcranials.

Archonta (primates, bats, tree shrews and flying lemurs)
The true function of the epipubic bone, and its relationship to the marsupial pouch has yet to be uncovered.
Archonta is a term used to group primates, bats (Order Chiroptera), tree shrews (Order Scandentia) and flying lemurs (Order Dermoptera) together, as well as many extinct mammal groups such as primate-like microsypoids, and rodent-like plesiadapids and carpolestids.

He called this cluster Archonta (which means "ruling beings," because it includes primates).
Character evidence supporting Archonta is scanty, but many systematists do think that Archonta is a homogeneous group consisting of at least Primates, Chiroptera (bats), Dermoptera (flying femurs), Scandentia (tree shrews), and Plesiadapiformes.
Among Archonta, flying femurs have been proposed as close relatives to bats.

Abstracts from papers presented at the 2003 CPSM Annual Meeting
Results of recent molecular studies cast doubt on the validity of Archonta, Megachiroptera, Microchiroptera, and Yinochiroptera and has even led some to consider novel alternatives for the evolution of flight and echolocation in mammals.
Phylogenetic analyses strongly support other recent work indicating that Archonta is not a natural assemblage and that the sister-taxon to Chiroptera, although still unclear, includes Cetartiodactyla, Perissodactyla, Carnivora, and possibly Pholidota.
Using representatives of these taxa as outgroups to evaluate interfamilial relationships within Chiroptera strong support was detected for recognition of the suborders Yinpterochiroptera (Pteropodidae, Rhinolophidae, Megadermatidae, Rhinopomatidae) and Yangochiroptera (all other families).

Do we really need formal tax= a Altungulata, Pseudoungulata, Uranotheria, Behemota, Tethytheria, Afrother= ia, Cetartiodactyla (=3D Eparctocyona ?), or even "oldies" like Glires and Archonta.
