Juan Ruiz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to his own book, he was imprisoned for years, thought to be between 1337 to 1350, as punishment for some of his deeds (if the poem is any guide, they were quite inconsistent with his position as priest).
It has been estimated that he died around 1350; by 1351, he no longer held the title of archpriest of Hita.

1350), the archpriest of Hita, was the author of the "Libro de buen amor," one of the most extraordinary poetic creations of the Middle Ages.
Since the poet also mentions a prison at the beginning of the Libro de buen amor (The Book of Good Love), scholars have argued that the reference in the poem is to the symbolic prison of Christian man and that this reference was interpreted literally by the scribe.
The Libro is analyzed at length in Anthony N. Zahareas, The Art of Juan Ruiz, Archpriest of Hita (1965).

 Dissertation Abstract
The second type of material, which lends itself to the comparative study of the theme of love and the search, is centered on the feminine figure of amorous lyric prior to and during the time of the Archpriest of Hite, of udhri origin, courtly and mystic.
Toward the end I analyze the philosophy of the Archpriest in relation to the predestination-free will dilemma, which coincides with the posture of the schools of interior knowledge that flourished within Islam, the premises of which are intimately linked with the theme of the search for knowledge.
The reading of the Book from this perspective has led me to the conclusion that the adventures of its protagonist and his repeated failures are an allegorical representation of the constant love and restlessness that the seeker after knowledge experiences during his journey.

The Marquis of Santillana, one of the age's principal figures (1398-1458), introduced the sonnet in Spain, wrote alegorical and lyrical poetry, collected proverbs and is remembered for his 'serranillas' (pastoral songs).
Other great authors -Juan de Mena (Laberinto de la Fortuna); the archpriest of Talavera (Corbacho) and the brilliant Jorge Manrique -whose 'Coplas' were written on the death of his father- shaped an extremely valuable poetic panorama.
The period during which Spanish Gothic and the Renaissance imported from Italy converged, coincided with the development of the Universities (Alcala de Henares and Salamanca) which combined elements of both architectural styles and produced the Plateresque style.

 Juan Ruiz Criticism and Essays
Francisco J. Hernández presents a study of a document Ruiz signed as a witness, a paper that states the ruling in a religious jurisdiction dispute.
Hernández writes that it is the only document known to exist that links Ruiz's name with his title, Archpriest of Hita, and that the linkage indicates the veracity of at least one level of the book.
Anthony N. Zahareas studies Ruiz's sources and contends that the Spanish author appropriated the works of Aristotle only to the extent that they served his ends; the remainder he either altered or ignored.

My Ph.D. is from the English Department at UCLA, where I resisted the temptation to specialize early; I worked mostly on Old and Middle English literature, but I made regular forays into 16th and 17th century literature as well.
Since then, my primary focus has been on Chaucer and other English poets of the 14th century, but I’ve also published on the Archpriest of Hita (a 14th century Spanish poet!), Beowulf, Malory, and Graham Greene.
Here at Mount St. Mary's College, I teach certain classes for English majors on a pretty regular basis: the Shakespeare class (English 73/173), English Literature: The Beginnings of 1500 (English 143), and English Literature: 1500-1700 (English 144).

One of the greatest poets of the Middle Ages wrote in the fourteenth century.
He was the Archpriest of Hita, author of "EI Libro de Buen Amor" (Book of Good Love], a somewhat unexpected sort of book to come from a Churchman, with its ribald humor, Chaucerian tone and Spanish wit.
The "Libro de Buen Amor" also makes wide use of the play on words, a characteristic of much later Spanish Literature.

Written about the middle of the fourteenth century by a scandalous Rabelesian Archpriest, to while away the long years he spent lying in a dungeon, as a punishment for his sins, this spirited, exuberant satire of human frailty is, as scholars agree, the greatest literary classic to come out of Spain during the middle ages.
The famous BOOK OF GOOD LOVE is as varied in character as the versatile genius of its author.
Even when he discusses death, a subject which the timid usually touch with piety and the pious with timidity, the Archpriest keeps his accustomed poise and jibes:
