  Archy and mehitabel
archy (whose name was always written in lower case) was a cockroach who had been a free-style poet in a previous life, and he took to writing stories of his life on an old typewriter at the newspaper office when everyone in the building had left.
archy's best friend was an alley cat named "mehitabel," and the two of them shared a series of day-to-day adventures that made satiric commentary on daily life in the city during the era of the early 20th century.
Because he was a cockroach, archy was unable to reach the shift key on the typewriter, and so all of his verse was written without capitalization or punctuation.

archy and mehitabel is the title of a series of newspaper columns written by Don Marquis beginning in 1916.
Archy's best friend was an alley cat named "Mehitabel," and the two of them shared a series of day-to-day adventures that made satiric commentary on daily life in the city during the 1910's and 20's.
Because he was a cockroach, Archy was unable to operate the shift key on the typewriter (he jumped on each key to type; since using shift requires two keys to be pressed simultaneously, he physically could not use capitals), and so all of his verse was written without capitalization or punctuation.

This column had several recurring characters, all of whom are now forgotten except for the (lower-case) archy and mehitabel, who inspired the Broadway musical 'Shinbone Alley'.
That fellow archy was a cockroach poet -- or a human poet reincarnated in cockroach form -- who chronicled the exploits of himself and alley cat mehitabel by flinging himself headfirst onto the keys of Marquis's manual typewriter.
The tales of archy and mehitabel are so clever that it pains me to report that Don Marquis copied this premise from an earlier author: John Kendrick Bangs had previously used the idea of an insect who communicates with humans via typewriting.

A whimsical and sophisticated sage, archy the cockroach entertained readers with iconoclastic observations on pretensions, politics, and our place in the cosmos during Marquis' career as a New York newspaper columnist in the 1920s and 30s.
Although his tales appeared in lower case, his views achieved a level grand enough to solidify Marquis' reputation as an American humorist in the tradition of Mark Twain, Joel Chandler Harris, and Ring Lardner.

Besides giving him a humorus outlet for blunt social criticism, Archy and Mehitabel and the other characters solved a recurring problem for Marquis: Many of their stories were written in advance, and they easily filled his column when he was running short of copy.
Archy's wide-ranging commentary was especially useful, and its short, broken lines of type were explained away by the obvious challenges of a cockroach trying to operate a typewriter.
