Loon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A loon is the size of a large duck, which it resembles, but is unrelated; its plumage is largely grey or fl, and it has a spear-shaped bill.
The Common Loon is the national bird of Canada and is depicted on the Canadian one-dollar coin, which has come to be known affectionately as the loonie.
Loons breed on inland freshwater lakes and ponds, but migrate to the coasts in winter, often much further south.

Loons: Wildlife Notebook Series - Alaska Department of Fish and Game
Loons are known as “spirits of the wilderness,” and it is fitting that Alaska has all five species of loons found in the world.
Loons have difficulty hatching eggs and raising chicks on some lakes due to heavy predation from gulls, jaegers, and foxes, or disturbance from float planes, boats or fishers that force adults off their nests, allowing the eggs to chill and die.
Loons can be heard day and night when they preform their breeding displays, but they are generally quiet in winter.

Loons are reported to be among the oldest groups of birds still living today, with a history some think stretches back more than 50 million years.
Loons will use whatever materials are on hand to build their nests; pine tree needles, leaves, grass, moss and other vegetation have been found in loon nests.
Loon chicks can swim right away, but spend some time on their parents' back to rest, conserve heat, and avoid predators such as large carnivorous fish, snapping turtles, gulls, eagles and crows.

Common Loon Migration Study - Frequently Asked Questions
Loons return to northern forested lakes and rivers in the springtime, usually in April or early May. The breeding range includes Alaska and northern Canada south to Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
Biologists suspect that loons return to the same general area where they were born and try to work their way into a territory.
Loon calls are used to communicate among family members and to maintain territories during the breeding season.

The Pacific Loon is nearly identical to the Common Loon except for size (24 inches in length versus the small Pacific Loon at 18 inches).
The bill of the Pacific Loon is relatively slender and straight, but the lower half of the bill of the Yellow-billed Loon is thickened at the base, yellow, and curved upward.
The dark of the nape of the neck of the Pacific Loon contrasts with the white of the throat, but does not contrast with the throat in the Red-throated Loon.

Canada, National Symbols on Stamps and Coins
During the breeding season the dorsal plumage is patterned with white markings, except in the red-throated loon (species Gavia stellata), which, during the summer, is distinguished by a reddish brown throat patch.
The common loon, or great northern diver (G. immer), is the most abundant loon in North America; its counterpart across Eurasia is the similar white- (or yellow-) billed diver (G. adamsii).
The red-throated and arctic loons are virtually circumpolar in distribution, the latter being most abundant on the Pacific coast of North America.

Arctic Loon: Breeds in northwestern Alaska; occurs in coastal western Alaska, especially at St. Lawrence Island, during migration.
When a fish is caught, the loon throws back its head and swallows fish headfirst; may fly long distances to larger bodies of freshwater or to the coast for food.

A loon’s location of breeding, number of adults and young, and time of residence on particular waterways are crucial for determining the loon’s status and survival rate in Wisconsin.
Loons are territorial birds and generally only one pair is found on each lake, except for very large bodies of water where several pairs inhabit a lake.
Loon eggs are roughly 3 1/2 by 2 1/4 in size with a thick shell and are olive green color speckled with brown spots.

Loons have webbing that spans three of the four digits of their feet, and the foot can be several centimeters across when stretched out to allow greater surface area for powerful swimming and diving.
Loons are absolutely unable to walk on dry land, because their legs are set so far posteriorly on their body, so the nest must be immediately adjacent, if not floating on, the water, for them to access it readily.
Loon chicks are semi-precocial- able to see, swim, and dive upon hatching, but require feeding and a high amount of care, due to the predatory requirement of survival.

This makes it the most difficult loon to study closely (because it is the farthest offshore) but in truth it is by far the most common species in California.
Knowing all the plumages of all five species of loons is important in California where three species are regular; Arctic Loon is a super-vagrant; and the fifth species, Yellow-billed Loon (left) is a rare but regular vagrant, averaging perhaps 1-2/year.
Traditionally, loons are considered one of the oldest groups of birds and placed near the front of the taxonomic order near grebes, penquins, and procelarids.

Other ways of protecting loon habitat includes implementing no-wake zones to prevent erosion of nesting habitat and working with homeowner associations and other owners, thereby allowing the public to become active in the protection of Common Loons and loon habitat on their lake (Dolan 1994).

 Journey North Common Loons
Loons molt about the same time each year (beginning in January and continuing through March or April) regardless of how soon the ice melts on our northern lakes.
Loons follow the warming spring temperatures (and the melting of lakes) north, so when the ice is going out on lakes in Michigan, the loons are probably already in Virginia or even southern Ohio and Indiana.
However, if the ice does melt sooner than usual, you may see loons arriving that are in the middle of their molt.

I told her that I thought it might be an Arctic Loon, but that I was by no means sure, remembering only that this species was supposed to be bigger than a Pacific, with a white flank.
Colin agreed that it appeared to be an adult Arctic Loon in basic plumage, and mentioned that the white flank, although obvious, was not the only thing differing from a Pacific Loon.

The CO loon looks to be fine for an Arctic, to me. The concern over the apparent chinstrap is understandable, but is clearly explained by the molt stage and pattern on the throat sides.
The Colorado loon is thus in fairly complete basic body plumage with the wing coverts appearing as alternate feathers (because they were replaced the previous spring) and a few scapulars either retained alternate or resembling alternate feathers.
I have seen many Arctic Loons (Black-throated Diver) in the UK and basically, my recollection is that the structure, bill shape and flank patch is similar to the Colorado bird.
