Topic: Arctic Skua

Arctic Skua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arctic Skua, Stercorarius parasiticus, known as Parasitic Jaeger in North America, is a seabird in the skua family Stercorariidae.
Like the larger skua species, it continues this piratical behaviour throughout the year, showing great agility as it harasses its victims.
Identification of this skua is complicated by its similarities to Long-tailed Skua and Pomarine Skua, and the existence of three colour phases.

Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The influence of territory density on the vulnerability of Arctic skuas Stercorarius parasiticus to predation.
The distribution of Arctic skua territories on Foula changed markedly between 1976 and 1999, with a disproportionately large decline occurring in most of the northern half of the island.
This is particularly relevent in the light of recent concerns that the impact of great skua predation on other seabirds, including Arctic skuas, is unacceptably high in Shetland, and that some degree of population management should be considered.

 Long Tailed Skua
The distinction between the Arctic Skua and the Long Tailed Skua are the tail feathers of the Long Tailed Skua.
Skuas breed along the sea coasts and inland away from the sea and they breed on the bare ground at high altitudes and when they migrate they fly to the opposite hemisphere.
While the Skua are in their winter quarters they spend all their time at sea though they will settle on drifting objects, on the shore at times and in the southern hemisphere will perch on ships.

 Arctic Skua
In Britain the Arctic Skua is confined to breeding in north and west Scotland, at the southern extremity of its circumpolar, high latitude breeding range.
Counting Arctic Skuas is made difficult by the scattered nature of territories in many areas – in Mainland Shetland and Caithness, single pairs may be scattered, often considerable distances from the coast and might be easily overlooked.
Breeding success of Arctic Skuas in Shetland was also poor in 2000 and 2001, and birds that lost eggs early on may have shown low attendance in the territory, so that some breeding AOTs may also have been missed.

Skuas nest on the ground in temperate and arctic regions and are long-distance migrants.
Skuas are related to gulls, waders, auks and skimmers.
The skuas are often split into two genera with only the smaller species retained in ''Stercorarius'', and the large species transferred to ''Catharacta'', but there is no real genetic basis for this separation.

Although related to gulls, all the skuas show adaptations associated with their piratical and predatory way of life, and with their breeding at high latitudes close to both poles.
