Although one of the samples is from the autumn, the other from the spring, they are both from the rosette stage, before the flowering stem starts shooting.
The Arctium tomentosum in May: the same substantial individual that I could follow through the months (July photo below), and see the flowers come out properly cobwebbed and in an umbel.
This sample leaf from a basal rosette (to the left) had a nicely characteristic hollow stem - that's what the sliver is: the inside of the tube cut open.

 Common Burdock
One of them, Arctium tomentosum (Woolly Burdock) has abundant cobwebby hairs that cover the floral bracts below their hooked tips.
Another species, Arctium lappa (Great Burdock), is often taller than Common Burdock, and it has larger flowerheads about 1–1½" across.
The flowerheads of Great Burdock have longer stalks and they are arranged in flat-headed cymes, whereas the flowerheads of Common Burdock are more vertically bunched together on short stalks, as revealed in the upper photograph.

The one you find growing wild throughout much of the United states is A. minus and is hardly comparable to the aristocratic, cultivated A. lappa.
Anyhow, as I understand it, Arctium lappa is a perennial and is said to be best when the root is dug in its second year, although Harrington says the root can (also) be harvested about 2 and one half months after planting and eaten raw like a radish.
