Although the South American fur seal, Arctocephalus australis, lives in the same area, there seems to be little interaction or competition.
Pups are commonly attacked by the leopard seal, Hydrurga leptonyx, while all age groups are predated upon by sharks and the killer whale.
Several pinniped species live in the same area, such as the New Zealand fur seal, Arctocephalus forsteri, the leopard seal, Hydrurga leptonyx, and the Southern elephant seal, Mirounga leonina, but there seems to be no interaction.
