 Arctocephalus townsendi
townsendi is one of the rarest species of seal.
The Guadalupe fur seal is the only species of Arctocephalus found in the Northern Hemisphere.
Certain individuals have been sighted as far south as Puerto Gurrero, near the Mexico /Guatemala border, as far north as the Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and possibly in the Gulf of California.

 Fur Seals
This species was placed, together with Arctocephalus townsendi, in the separate genus Arctophoca, but it is now included in the genus Arctocephalus.
The main problem areas for this fur seal are: increased pollution with pesticides and heavy metals of its habitat, increased disturbance and the high level of net entanglement cases.
The Australian population was originally described as to belong to Arctocephalus doriferus (which is now a subspecies of Arctocephalus pusillus), but later it was realized that this animal was similar to the New Zealand fur seal, described as Arctocephalus forsteri.

In addition to Guadalupe fur seals (A. townsendi) I have dived among Northern and Galapagos fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus, A. galapagoensis) and have seen both species adopt this head-down posture as well, and suspect that it may be a natural resting position for fur seals that share their waters with large sharks.

The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California, was surprised to receive three Guadalupe fur seals (Arctocephalus townsendi) this summer, one of which died at the start of June.
Only 13 of the fur seals have been treated in the 25 years or so that the Center has been in existence and it is very unusual to have three of them at the Center at the same time.
The decapitated bodies of the seals, all but two of them pups, were washed up on the southern beaches of the island, while a further 6 bodies, some of which were decapitated, were being investigated after being found on Tasmanian beaches.
