This species is occasionally confused with Arctocephalus tropicalis, with which it breeds sympatrically.
In part of the range this species breeds sympatrically with Arctocephalus tropicalis and may be competing for space and food.
The Australian population was originally described as to belong to Arctocephalus doriferus (which is now a subspecies of Arctocephalus pusillus), but later it was realized that this animal was similar to the New Zealand fur seal, described as Arctocephalus forsteri.

Arctocephalus tropicalis is the fifth pinniped species in which the M. tuberculosis complex has been detected.
Since subantarctic fur seals are widely distributed in the Southern Hemisphere, it is possible that the tuberculosis cases may have a common origin and could spread to other austral regions and species.

Growth in pups of the subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) on Amsterdam Island
Growth in body mass in pups of the subantarctic fur seal Arctocephalus tropicalis was studied at Amsterdam Island, southern Indian Ocean during the rearing period between December 1995 and August 1996.
We examined the change in the rates of mass gain and mass loss with pup age to explain the overall change in mass throughout the rearing period, when mothers alternate foraging trips at sea and attendance periods ashore.

Individuals of the species have a characteristic pale "facial mask" that distinguishes them from all other fur seals.
Adults moult their coats between March and May. Subantarctic fur seal breeding colonies sometimes share space with Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) and there is evidence of some inter-breeding between these species at Marion and Macquarie Islands.
Adult males usually measure up to 1.8m in length and weigh up to 165kg (average 131kg), while adult females are about 1.5m in length and weigh approximately 50-55kg.

Compared to sea-lions, fur otaries are usually smaller, thicker-furred and sharper-muzzled - hence their scientific name derived from Greek Arctocephalus, which means bearlike head.
The Amsterdam fur otary was first described by Gray (1872) who called it Arctocephalus tropicalis.
This species mainly breeds in the subantartic islands in the North of the Antarctic convergence, hence its English name of Subantartic fur seal.

The Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella (Peters, 1875), (also known as the Kerguelen and southern fur seal) like other fur seals are distinguished by the presence of external ears and their ability to use their flippers to prop themselves up into a "standing" position.
Adult males of this species measure 1.6-2 m in length and weigh between 90-210 kg, averaging 188 kg.
Some cross-breeding of Antarctic and Subantarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus tropicalis, has been observed at Macquarie and Marion Islands.
