There are rumors that Arcturus is splitting up after the release of The Sham Mirrors.
Arcturus has arguable been one of the best metal bands of the past decade.
But I think a significant reason why Arcturus sounds kind of different from other bands in that genre, is that we are not particularly into that genre.

Arcturus (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arcturus is an avant garde metal band formed in Norway in 1987 under the name Mortem.
The band has released four official full-length albums thus far, all based in the avant garde genre of music and very theatrical in their essence.
Arcturus has experimented with music, extracting influences and incorporating elements from all over the spectrum of music (fl metal, classical music, pop, electronica, metal, trip-hop), but the band is rooted as a metal outfit.

Following all these shake-ups, the band did the strangest, most unpredictable thing in their career to this point, and made an album that while not mediocre or bad by any stretch of the imagination, hardly sets the imagination and spirit on fire as did their previous efforts.
Simen's transition back into the band is pretty fluid, he adopts certain Garm-isms like the ghost voice but also brings alot of his own weapons to the table, one of which is his noticably bigger and fuller voice.
The humor that Garm injected into the band is pretty much gone, replaced by a more stale generic epic vibe that wouldn't be out of place on the newer Borknagar and Dimmu stuff or the neoclassical sleeping pill known as Winds.

ARCTURUS presented us with an avant garde and theatrical fl metal release, which mixed an incredibly different number of styles, including fl metal (of course), drum-n-bass, trip-hop, experimental industrial etc. The result was a release that intensely haunts you with its mental imagery and beauty.
You can see how important ARCTURUS is; after only 3 full length albums, with the last album coming out almost three years ago, ARCTURUS manage to headline a sold-out festival and captivate the audience.
It seems that ARCTURUS without Krystoffer is possible - Simen was very impressive, giving a captivating and extremely melodic, theatrical and powerful performance, that spanned all three ARCTURUS releases, with a minor focus on “La Masquerade Infernale”.

It is important to note that despite all this talk of complexity and layers that there are several errors in the mix in the form of the occasional glitch or badly mixed bass or synth part.
The band have said they hope to re-mix the album before the second pressing, but they need to find time away from touring first.

The band can be menacing in its attack, but when it slows down to deliver Classical passages with big a male chorus chanting harmonies things get out of hand, in a bad way.
The band must have had some kind of a rationalization for doing this, but in essence this is the progression of the ‘cover version syndrome.’ For the last while every band on the metal scene has been focused on recording and promoting other people’s songs.
Bands are now re-recording their own albums and, in essence, becoming their own cover bands.

The bonus is that this well-deserving band has figured out a way to match the songwriting genius of its individual members' other projects (Winds, Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, etc.) without sacrificing a single ounce of the twisted soundscapes which have made this band one of the most respectfully original outfits in the modern metal scene.
Arcturus' new album is another amazing piece of work, which could only be expected by a band consisting of so many uniquely talented musicians.
As a matter of fact, like many other Arcturus fans, I didn't believe it possible to fill the shoes of someone as charismatic and unique as Garm, but when it was announced that Spiral Architect vocalist Oyvind Haegeland was recruited, I was ecstatic, Spiral Architect being one of the godliest bands in the universe.

Powerful though these are, they rarely compensate for the guitar, which although nondominant is competent despite its adherence to using simple elements of chord progression as fundamental form of the song, sometimes not even twisting a riff from standard direction but dropping a fluid tritone through a chorus.
Lead guitars are of the quality one would find in a well-trained hard rock band, with a good understanding of technique and some advanced tonal and rhythmic ideas, but without standing out.
The cheesiness of self-importance is present throughout large parts of this album, where overdramatized elements of classic romantic illusions are brought to utter fruition and largesse by very staged introductions.

Being in a band and traveling around doing shows, especially metal and prog festivals, gives one the opportunity to meet many bands and musicians that would otherwise be unknown to the masses (remember what modern radio DOESN’T play for all of us prog and metal fans!).
It also gives one the chance to learn about a lot of bands that, while they may not be playing the current festival, are well known and respected within the “circle”.
Arcturus was one of these bands for me. I had never heard them, though I had heard OF them on many occasions.

 Arcturus [www.progweed.net]
Arcturus was founded originally as a side project for members of various brutal Norweigen fl metal bands such as Ulver, Emperor and the notorious Mayhem.
Strangely this album is somewhat unknown in progressive rock circles, perhaps this is because Arcturus is generally known as a 'fl-metal' band.
Those fearing fl metal growls need not be scared off, as the band has apparently dumped that element, revealing a suprisingly expressive 'clean' vocal style.

In 2005, Arcturus are possibly not the band Garm (now departed) intended them to be, but nevertheless, they are still very much one of the more expressive and sophisticated post-fl metal acts in existence.
There is no suggestion that 'Arcturus' fail in their quest - as this is a grandiose piece of dark, spacey, epic metal - but it doesn't quite have the magic, nor the progressional leap that they captured between each of their three previous affairs.
Fans of the band might be a little divided over this new one - the warmer, almost gentle dream like nature of it is its strength as far as I am concerned - but having said that, it may not provide enough 'darkness' for fans of the band earlier material.

Arcturus have come a long way in their seven-odd years of existence.
A new lease of life was breathed into the band during the period when both Hellhammer and Sverd were playing in Emperor, as Samoth joined the ranks on guitar, and Garm and Skoll from Ulver (vocals and bass respectively) were added to the line-up.
After recording the 'Constellation' demo with the band in 1994 and releasing it on his label Nocturnal Art as a strictly limited mini-CD (recently reissued on vinyl with various bonus tracks), Samoth was forced to bow out due to his impending imprisonment.

Arcturus, being the eccentric bunch they are, instead provide listeners with one new track, "Deception Genesis," which is very similar in style to La Masquerade, and a series of techno/hip-hop/industrial remixes from the aforementioned album.
This album is not recommended to the average Arcturus listener, who expects masterfully creative, ultra-symphonic, weird metal tunes, unless, of course, you are yearning for special house cleaning music.
The band's first two releases are recommended to those unfortunate souls who have been without Arcturus' presence, while this album should be left to those familiar with the band.
