Ardahan (in English also known as Erdehan) is the capital city of Ardahan province (established in 1992) in northeastern Turkey.
The town was captured by the Seljuk Turks in 1069 AD by the Sultan Alpaslan, and then in 1551 by the Ottoman Empire.
The most important monument of the city is the Ardahan Fortress that was built by the Selcuks (Seljuks) and later on utilized by the Ottoman Empire.

Unfortunately the castle of Ardahan lies deep in a military zone and even though that place had fantastic view of the city and the Kura River, the soldiers did allow me in to look around, but did not allow me to take any photos.

Russia gained the provinces of Kars, Ardahan (and Batumi) from the Ottoman Empire as a result of the Treaty of Berlin which concluded the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-78.

The Ardahan area borders directly to the area described in the section Between Savsat and Ardahan.
We drove from the Çam Geçidi pass towards Ardahan, had a look just east of Ardahan at the pine forest hills for raptors and drove a few kilometres south to a river and its valley.
Hotels are most probably present at Ardahan and surely at Kars.

Still, the area is surely worth a visit and an excellent combination is possible if you are to visit Aktas Gölü or the Isak Pasa Palace after a visit to Sivri Kaya.
Between Savsat and Ardahan we encountered a high plateau, which is said to be a pass called Çam Geçidi, but is not recognizable as one for almost the whole area is at a considerable altitude.
Some mountains species live here, and the weather is very cold and cloudy.
