 Ardbeg - About Whisky - Malt - www.scotchwhisky.com
Of the three, Ardbeg uses the most heavily peated malt, but paradoxically does not produce a whisky which is as smoky / medicinal as Laphroaig or Lagavulin.
There was a family of Macdougals at Ardbeg from 1798, one of whom started a legal distillery in 1815, which was producing around 500 gallons a day by 1835.
Until the early 1980s Ardbeg had its own floor maltings and, as there were no fans in the pagoda-roofed malting houses, the trapped peat smoke thoroughly permeated the malt.

 Islay Whisky, Ardbeg
Situated on the south coast of Islay, Ardbeg was famous as a hideout for smugglers who had to make themselves scarce after their cache was discovered by the Excise men in the late 18th century.
However, with the majority of its output used in blending, Ardbeg struggled to remain viable during the economic downturn of the 1970s, resulting in it being run on a care and maintenance basis from 1983.
Ardbeg maintains the robust and earthy aromas associated with Islay malts.

Ardbeg is operated by Allied Distillers but they do not sell its produce officially as a single malt.
Ardbeg was founded by the Macdougall family in 1815, which makes it the second oldest disyillery on Islay.
It seemed that Ardbeg was destined to stay in the background of Allied Distillers' operations as a poor relation of its sister Laphroaig, with whom it shared many of its characteristics.

I believe that part of the deal in the sale of Ardbeg (why Allied could never do anything with it still remains one of the greatest mysteries of the whisky industry) was a delayed payment for the stocks of maturing malt.

Unchillfiltered, cask strength (although at a mild 42%abv), it is everything that Ardbeg is famous for, intensely peaty, sweet, complex and a finish that lingers well into the night.
I responded: I too am enjoying an 8YO Ardbeg from 1991, though it is not specifically identified as not chill-filtered and is bottled at 43%abv.

Ardbeg 17yo (40%, OB, bottled +/- 1997, code L7 338 4ML 11:40, 70cl) was one of the very first batches released in - or possibly shortly after - the year Glenmorangie took over control of the distillery.
During most of the 1990's Ardbeg was very hard to find apart from the odd Gordon and MacPhail bottling, but by the time the new owners had the Ardbeg distillery up and running again Ardbeg was becoming much more widely available, in the form of the new OB's but as independent bottlings as well.
Official bottlings of Ardbeg released in the late 1990's were excellent without exception, but it seems that the quality of the latest releases is slipping.

Revered by connoisseurs as a truly extraordinary whisky, Ardbeg Single Islay Malt stands alone as the most delicate and complex of all the Islay malts.

Ardbeg long had been known as the producer of the most peat-heavy whisky in this region characterized by smoky single malts, but what we discovered, in an isolated corner of the warehouse, were a few barrels of unpeated Scotch distilled in 1980, shortly after Ardbeg closed its malting operations.

Major investment in the reopening of this classic waterside distillery was the most exciting news in the malt whisky industry on the eve of the new millennium.

Whisky produced at that time was due to be released as a new, probably less peaty, ten-year-old around the turn of the millennium.
