Topic: Ardea (genus)

  Heron
Within the family Ardeidae, all members of the genera, Botaurus and Ixobrychus are classed as bitterns, not herons, however the species sometimes known as egrets are simply white-coloured herons with decorative plumes, and not a biologically distinct group.
The Boatbill is sometimes classed as a heron, and sometimes given its own family Cochlearidae.

However the egrets are not a biologically distinct group from the herons, and tend to be named differently because they are mainly white or have decorative plumes.
Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises and spoonbills, unlike these groups, they fly with their necks retracted, not outstretched.

 Blue Heron
When in the Floridas, during winter, I observed that the Blue Herons associated with other species, particularly the White Heron, Ardea Egretta, and the Louisiana Heron, Ardea Ludoviciana, all of which were in the habit of roosting together in the thick evergreen low bushes, that cover the central parts of the islands along the coast.
Their passage to and from their feeding places, is as regular as the rising and setting of the sun, and, unless frequently disturbed, they betake themselves every night to the same locality, and almost to the same spot.
At no period can the young of this species be confounded with, or mistaken for that of the Ardea candidissima, by a person really acquainted with these birds, for the Blue Heron is not only larger than the latter, but the very colour of its feet and legs is perfectly distinctive.

Can be confused with the white morph of the great blue heron (Ardea herodias), the "great white heron", which occurs only in southern Florida.
The great egret's fl legs and feet distinguish it from the great white heron, which has yellow legs.
Ardea alba is a member of the Order Ciconiiformes (herons and storks) which encompasses the long-necked wading birds.

Indeed, this is constantly the case with all the large species with which I am acquainted, from Ardea coerulea to Ardea occidentalis; but the smaller species lay more as they diminish in size, the Louisiana Heron having frequently four, and the Green Heron five, and even sometimes six.
I had them placed in a large coop, containing four individuals of the Ardea occidentalis, who immediately attacked the newcomers in the most violent manner, so that I was obliged to turn them loose on the deck.
I had frequently observed the great antipathy evinced by the majestic white species towards the blue in the wild state, but was surprised to find it equally strong in young birds which had never seen one, and were at that period smaller than the others.

NOTES ON THE PLUMAGES AND GENERIC STATUS OF THE LITTLE BLUE HERON
He found it difficult to separate his genus Hydranassa from an expanded genus Egretta (including the Snowy Egret, Leucophoyx thula, and the Common Egret, Casmerodius albus), and had to base his separation on the highly adaptive signal character of breeding plumes.
Although he stated that E. thula and the Old World E. garzetta "have quite different plumes and appear not to be closely related," immature specimens lacking plumes and of inter- mediate measurements may be almost impossible to identify to species-- in spite of the striking structural difference between crown plumes of adults.
The genus Egretta should stand adjacent to Ardea rather than separated from it (as in the 1957 A.O.U. Check-list) by Butorides; contrary to Phillips et al.

He answered in the affirmative; but felt some doubt as to my procuring the eggs of one kind at least, which breed earlier than the rest, and was pure white from the shell, and the largest of all.
Thinking the species to which he alluded might be the Ardea alba of LINNAEUS I asked if it had long thread-like feathers over the tail during the breeding season.
You will see from the above statement, that the Herons are almost similar to our Pigeons in respect to the extent of their migrations, which must appear the more remarkable on account of their comparative size, Ardea Herodias and A. virescens corresponding in a great degree to the Columba migratoria and C. carolinensis.

Lumpers are people who look most at similarities and say, in effect, "all these herons are so similar that we can put them in the same genus, Ardea": hence Ardea alba.
Other scientists take a position in between, and use Ardea for the "coloured herons" and Egretta for the "white herons".
It is a complicated business, and one which, contrary to the fond hopes of many listers, can not be regulated once and for all.

Northern Oriole, a species on the ABA Checklist, has been split by the AOU into three species, one of which does not occur in the ABA area, and therefore will not be added to the ABA Checklist.
Specifically, with > the decision to lift American Egret from the genus Casmerodius and move it > to the genus Ardea (to become Ardea alba), it now joins Great Blue Heron > (Ardea herodias) as a co-member of its new genus.
If it is the most Egretta-like of all Ardea spp, then it should come at, or near, the end of the genus.

The genetic evidence as to which genus it belongs to is inconclusive, some suggest it is closer to Ardea, others to Egretta, and others still give it a genus of its own Casmerodius.
It is generally agreed now that Great (White) Egret is not a member of the genus Egretta but it is still uncertain whether it is best placed in Ardea or a new family CasmerodiUs (note spelling Michael).
The generic name varies between Egretta, Ardea and Casmerodius as we've seen : in skeletal features the species is closest to Ardea but in behaviour it resembles Egretta so Casmerodius has been suggested as a new monotypic genus.

The Great White Egret, White Heron, Common Egret or Great Egret (Ardea alba) is a wading egret, found in most of the tropical and warmer temperate parts of the world, although it is very local in southern Europe and Asia.
Various authors also identify this species as Egretta alba and Casmoderius alba.
However, this species closely resembles the large Ardea herons such as Grey Heron and Great Blue Heron in everything but colour, whereas it shows fewer similarities to the smaller white egrets.
