Ardnacrusha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ardnacrusha, originally The Shannon Scheme, is Ireland's largest river hydroelectric scheme and is operated on the River Shannon near Limerick City.
The generating plant at Ardnacrusha is composed of three vertical-shaft Francis turbo-generators (installed in 1929) and one vertical -shaft Kaplan turbo-generator (installed in 1934) operating under an average head of 28.5 meters.
Ardnacrusha was built under the leadership of the German firm Siemens-Schuckertwerke during the mid-1920s and was a major project undertaken by the then new Irish Free State.

The works involved the diversion of 90% of the Shannon into a head race canal 7.5 m long by which the water was delivered to Ardnacrusha, where a fall of 34 m was available.
Ardnacrusha was also the headquarters of ESB until 1954.
By 2000 Ardnacrusha supplied only about 3% of the annual demand but it is still vitally important to the system as a 'rapidly available' source of power and for cover in cases of emergency or sudden breakdown of plant.

 History of Parteen-Meelick-Coonagh
The village of Parteen was formerly known as Ardnacrusha but when the hydroelectric station opened in the area, the plant took the name for the station.
Rivers and streams had to be re-routed to accommodate the project, bridges were constructed, a 7 ½ mile stretch of land was dug out to form the Head Race from the Weir to Ardnacrusha, new railway lines were laid, and the power station itself was built.
Taoiseach William T. Cosgrave opened it on July 22nd 1929 and by the end of the year it was supplying electricity into the national grid.
