Ardnamurchan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ardnamurchan (Scottish Gaelic: Ard na Murchan) is a 50 square mile peninsula in north west Scotland, noted for being very unspoilt and undisturbed.
Strictly speaking Ardnamurchan covers only the peninsula beyond the villages of Salen (in the south) and Acharacle (in the north), but nowadays the term is used much more generally to include the neighbouring districts of Sunart, Ardgour, Morvern, and even Moidart (which was not part of Argyll).
Ardnamurchan Point, which has a 36 metre tall lighthouse built on it, is commonly described as the most westerly point in the British mainland although Corrachadh Mor (a kilometre to the south) is a few metres further west.

However, although the Moine rocks on Ardnamurchan were subjected to temperatures of several hundred degrees centigrade and were buried several kilometres down in the earth's crust, in western Ardnamurchan they have, unusually, remained relatively undeformed.
The Moine rocks are the oldest rocks on Ardnamurchan and may be regarded as the foundation of the Ardnamurchan peninsula.
It was by studying the distribution of Ardnamurchan's cone-sheets and ring-dykes that geologists were able to identify the three separate centres of volcanic activity on the peninsula.

As you travel west from Kilchoan to Ardnamurchan Point you increasingly feel you must be coming to land's end, but sightings of the lighthouse are at best fleeting in this rock strewn and bumpy landscape.
The boring answer is that Ardnamurchan Lighthouse was automated some years ago: but that doesn't stop you thinking that they might be back to finish their breakfast at any moment...

In those days the journey to the lighthouse at the Point of Ardnamurchan was regarded as an pointless adventure only for the hardiest of vehicles driven by the foolhardy.
Possessing but five summits in excess of 1000ft, Ardnamurchan is still much neglected by the mountaineer or hill-walker but closer acquaintance will reward those of a pioneering spirit.
It is to be expected that a visit to Ardnamurchan's lighthouse is the prime objective on any visit to the district.
