Ardour contains a powerful multitrack audio editor/arranger that is completely non-destructive and capable of all standard non-linear editing operations (insert, replace, delete, move, trim, select, cut/copy/paste).
Ardour's channel capacity is limited only by the number on your audio interface and the ability of your disk subsystem to stream the data back and forth.
Ardour is sample rate and size neutral - any hardware formats from 8 to 32 bits, rates from 8kHz to 192kHz.

Ardour is designed to work with automated mixer control surfaces, but again, your equipment has to support the features.
Recording in Ardour is simple: click on the R button in your selected track to arm it for recording and then set your inputs and levels in the track's mixer strip.
Ardour already has been used to record and mix entire CD projects, and more users are reporting success with Ardour in their own recording projects.

 Some music recorded with Ardour
I wrote an article for the Linux Journal about using Ardour to create multitrack recordings of some original pieces and other music.
Seven tracks in Ardour, four MIDI-to-WAV conversions (via TiMidity) imported for basic guitar/keyboard, bass, and drums, three live tracks for rhythm guitar, vocal, and harmonica.
My use of Ardour was purposely restricted to applying Tim Goetze's versatile plate reverb (that's what Tim calls it) to one track, rebalancing the tracks, and lowering the master output to avoid some clipping.

Ardour is intended to function as a "professional" HDR system, replacing dedicated hardware solutions such as the Mackie HDR, the Tascam 2424 and more traditional tape systems like the Alesis ADAT series.
It is also intended to provide the same or better functionality as software systems such as ProTools, Sampli- tude, Logic Audio, Nuendo and Cubase VST (we acknowledge these and all other names as trademarks of their respective owners).
Ardour will run without it, but its appearance is, uhm, ugly.

Ardour is a Canadian indie band that is just starting out...out of my basement actually.
Ardour started as my (Tyler's) project and it is, as most likely will always stay as, pure entertainment only.
Ardour is not likely to gain much success in the future because the band seems to range in its musical style (hayden/sebadoh through to melvins and even sonic youth influenced ideas).

Ardour uses the libsndfile library which can understand a multitude of file types so you will more than likely be able to import your tracks.
Apart from the massive reduction in RAM usage and the security of never changing an original recording, the EDL also means that ardour can restart in the same place you were at before your session was closed or if your machine or ardour has a systems crash.

As with many things in my life, I have to get realistic, and there are 2 aspects of reality that have to be acknowledged here: 1) with the current plan for manual (Paul writes it), there will be no manual.
2) likely income from the manual is going to be pretty small, insufficient to make ardour a viable income source to live on, or even be a significant part of it.
There is a proviso: I will still reserve the right to later publish a manual (probably via CafePress), and collect any revenues that come from it.
