Ardour (audio processor) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ardour is a hard disk recorder and digital audio editor application released under the GNU General Public License as Free Software.
Ardour's intention is to provide digital audio workstation software suitable for professional use.
Ardour supports digital audio at arbitrary sample rates, to the extent of the hardware's capabilities, as well as input and output in a number of different file formats.

Ardour's approach to GUI takes a page from the Linux playbook (as well it should), and provides an interface that is extraordinarily quick and efficient, albeit a little difficult to learn at first (just take a look at the venerable Emacs and vi for other examples).
An appropriate example is interfacing Ardour with Pure Data, a FOSS dataflow programming language that allows manipulation of audio in realtime.
The argument against DSP hardware goes that with audio data becoming so easy to process, better results will be achieved by upgrading general purpose hardware, than by buying specialized hardware acceleration.

Ardour capabilities include: multichannel recording, non-linear, non-destructive region based editing with unlimited undo/redo, full automation support, a mixer whose capabilities rival high end hardware consoles, lots of plugins to warp, shift and shape your music, and controllable from hardware control surfaces at the same time as it syncs to timecode.
Ardour is not just a recorder, editor and mixer, but can also be used to master your project all the way to its final form.

 Linux Audio
The audio core consists of (1) the Linux kernel drivers that talk directly to the audio hardware, and (2) a programming interface (API) that developers use to communicate with these drivers.
The audio core is split into these two layers so that someone writing an audio application does not have to write code that talks directly to the hardware; instead they write code that talks to the drivers, and then the drivers talk to the hardware.
Ardour is intended to function as a "professional" HDR system, replacing dedicated hardware solutions such as the Mackie HDR, the Tascam 2424 and more traditional tape systems like the Alesis ADAT series.

Digital audio is recorded to your hard disk in a different manner, but the old terminology persists in the graphic representation of multiple audio streams as linear tracks.
Recording in Ardour is simple: click on the R button in your selected track to arm it for recording and then set your inputs and levels in the track's mixer strip.
Ardour already has been used to record and mix entire CD projects, and more users are reporting success with Ardour in their own recording projects.

Just be sure to tell any audio applications to store scratch data somewhere in your home directory (/home/austin/tmp, /home/austin/.audacity, or similar), on your scratch partition (/tape, /scratch, /audio, or whatever you design), and not on the root partition (/tmp, or similar).
Audio must be captured on-time, and written to disk as soon as the memory buffer is full.

Talk:Ardour (audio processor) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name Ardour is probably derived from the acronym ARDAW (A Realtime Digital Audio Workstation), which sounds like the phrase 'our DAW' - an oblique reference to the GPL, which in turn sounds like the word 'ardour'.
The reference to 'realtime' is due to the way in which Ardour is designed.
If you cite an official source, then feel free to put this back in.

It doesn’t matter if you’re on x86 or x86_64, the data is the same… although x86_64 has greater performance potential (not due to being 64 bit, but due to having more general purpose registers).
There are, however, audio processing processes which are more sensitve to noise, for example: an IIR filter’s inner loop.
I would expect that any audio processor module which needed additional precision would make use of it.

Music sequencer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nowadays, the term almost always refers to the feature of recording software which allows the user to record, play back and edit MIDI data.
Early analog music sequencers used control voltage/trigger interface, but were replaced by digital hardware- or software-based MIDI sequencers, which play back MIDI events and MIDI control information at a specified number of beats per minute.
As computer speeds increased in the 1990s, audio recording, audio editing, and sample triggering features were added to the software.
