Topic: Area code 360

Area code 360 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 360 is the area code for western Washington outside of the greater Seattle metropolitan area.
The area, which encompasses all of western Washington outside of urban King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties and Bainbridge Island, was previously part of Area code 206.
In 1999, an overlay area code of 564 was to be introduced to the entire 360 area; however the implementation has been delayed indefinitely by order of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.

 WUTC Orders Pooling In 360
The new 564 area code was planned to overlap Western Washington's four existing area codes.
Rather than set another date for introducing the new area code, the WUTC directed its staff to monitor number use on a monthly basis and determine later next year whether to propose a new date for the start of the area code.
Staff members believe there are enough telephone prefixes in the existing area codes (360, 206, 425, and 253) to meet the telephone industry's needs for the next year.

Area code 564 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally, the 564 area code was intended only as an overlay of area code 360, which serves areas of Western Washington outside of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area.
Since the development of the initial plan for the area code, the WUTC and the NANPA have rebuffed the telephone companies' request for a new NPA and instead directed them to actively share and efficiently use the number blocks already assigned.
The earliest current NANP estimate for when any Western Washington area code will run out of number blocks is the first quarter of 2010, as the WUTC has taken further steps to decrease the need for new number blocks in 360 and 509 and head off the need for new NPAs.

Long Distance Dialing Changes in Effect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Most UW telephone numbers remain in area code 206, but some locations (like Friday Harbor labs) are in the 360 area.
Note the new "360" area code for the part of Western Washington outside the Puget Sound area.
To accommodate this new type of area code (where the middle digit is not a 1 or 0), you must use a "1 + area code + number" whenever you dial a long distance call.

Faculty and staff remain area code 360 with prefix 650.
Effective February 1, 2001, a new area code of 564 will be "overlaid" on the existing 360 area code.
This means you’ll need to dial an area code and phone number "10-digit dialing" to complete all local calls.

WUTC Orders Companies To Share 360 Prefixes
This inefficient allocation of prefixes has been the main cause of the exhaustion of telephone area codes.
The number pooling order follows on the WUTC's decision in August 2001 to delay for at least a year the planned overlay of a new area code in western Washington.
Staff estimates that the new area code will not be needed for at least another 12 months.

HeraldNet: Status quo on area codes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The telecommunications industry once estimated the region would need to add a fourth area code by next year, but the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission said Wednesday that won't be the case after all.
Because the area codes were assigned to specific geographic regions, local calls within the same area codes have been possible with just dialing the seven-digit number.
The 360 area code is now projected to have enough available phone numbers until at least 2010.

Comprehensive guide to PhoneSeal's Area Code Correction Process
The 206 area code split on January 15, 1995, to 206 and 360, with the 231 exchange assigned to 360.
If the exchange was not affected by any splits, but the area code was assigned by a ZIP code lookup, correct the number to the new area code, count the number as a "corrected number", and go on to the next phone number.
If none of the number(s) indicated by the ZIP code are one of the possible new area codes, log it as an error, count the number as "ambiguous", add the new number to the list of numbers for the user to dial, do not perform any correction, and go on to the next number.

UTC effort postpones need for new area code in Western Washington
Because of the increased demand for new telephone numbers, the telecommunications industry earlier estimated that a new area code would have to be added next year in the area currently using the “360” area code.
But the new area code would have been “overlaid” across all of Western Washington, and the new code would be assigned to all new phone numbers in this half of the state.
The UTC expects telephone numbers in the “206”; area code to last until 2024, and those in the “253”; and “425”; areas to last until 2022 and 2025, respectively.
