	Florida Area Code Changes
		The new area code, 321, will be the same for the overlay areas and for Brevard County.
		The 786 area code was implemented as an overlay for the 305 area code in July of 1998.
		The part of the 305 area code in Monroe County that includes the Florida Keys kept the 305 area code with no overlay but with a number of three-digit local number prefixes reserved for future use, since the area is near population buildout.

		All existing numbers will retain their current area code, but new telephone customers for local phone service, cellular and paging services, and alarms, may be assigned a telephone number in the new overlay area code (689).
		Thomas C. Foley, NANPA's area code relief planner for the Eastern Region, which includes Florida, said the introduction of the new 689 area code is needed due to an increase in competition in the local phone service market and the growing demand by the public for additional telephone numbers.

		Chandler remained in area code 602; however, it changed to area code 480 in 1999.
		Area code 216 (Cleveland, Ohio) split in 1996, with Akron, Canton, and Youngstown moving to the new area code 330.
		The reason for the reconsideration is that the original plan was to continue to allow local calls within the same area code to be dialed with only the 7-digit number, but FCC regulations require that the area code be dialed on all calls in an overlay area.
