PUC Chooses 3-way Split For Area Code 409
Established in 1983 with the geographic split of area code 713, area code 409 currently extends up most of the Texas-Louisiana border, reaches west to Bryan-College Station, stretches down the eastern third of the Texas Gulf Coast and surrounds Houston.
The two new area codes should be announced within the next few weeks.
To give customers plenty of time to adjust to the new area codes, they will be encouraged to start using the new area codes in early February 2000.

 Demand splits area code
The 409 area code was split according to county lines; 409 remains in the east and southeastern portions of the greater Houston area, but two new codes, 936 and 979, were created from the old region.
The 936 area code covers the northern portion of the former area code, while the 979 code covers the western portions of the calling area.
This is the same situation which resulted in a split in the area code around Austin and Victoria, which affected the UH - Victoria campus.

Anticipating that the area code would exhaust in early 2000, the PUC held public hearings in March in Columbus, Galveston, Beaumont, Lufkin, Huntsville and Bryan.
Unfortunately, in area code 409 there are 175 rate centers that cannot be consolidated.

 Demand splits area codes
Another split is also affecting the Houston area, resulting in the creation of three area codes from the former 409 area code.
The 512 area code, which contained Austin and some southern regions of the Texas Gulf Coast, was overloaded by the demand for new numbers and was split into two area codes.
The 409 area code will remain in the east and southeastern portions of the greater Houston area, and two new codes will be created.
