		A large number of newspapers and state legislators in the current 502 area are asking the PSC to reverse its decision to have an overlay instead of a geographic split, so that we won’t have to dial the area code on the local calls.
		The overlay approach has the effect of eliminating the area code concept and replacing it with full-time 10-digit dialing and breaking the promise that was made to phone customers in 1959.
		If we have next-door neighbors with different area codes that have to be dialed on local calls, then children, the elderly and many of the rest of us will have difficulty remembering phone numbers.

	626 Area Code
		The 818 area code was implemented in 1984 when it was geographically split from the 213 area code, one of the three original area codes assigned to California in 1948 when the North American Numbering Plan was implemented.
		The 213 area code was reduced in size by the creation of area code 714 in 1951, 805 in 1957, 818 in 1984, 310 in 1992, and 323 in 1998.
		Before requiring the residents and businesses of the 626 area code to undergo another area code change, the CPUC recognized the necessity of determining the number of telephone numbers that are in use and the number yet to be used.

		One was to have a geographic split and change part of the 502 area to the 270 area so people would continue to dial only seven digits for local calls.
		Under the new plan, they will have to change all their advertisements to show their area code, and customers in the current 502 area code will have to dial 10 digits for local calls from now on while the people in Lexington and eastern Kentucky will have to dial only seven digits.
		The truth is that an overlay with two area codes and a geographic split have the same number of available telephone numbers, so a geographic split would not be a short term fix.

		The Public Service Commission's decision to create a new telephone area code to serve phone customers in the 502 area code was the right one.
		That's when the 606 area code is expected to run out of telephone numbers to assign due to normal growth and to the increased demands brought on by cellular phones, pagers, dedicated computer lines and local competition.
		The creation of the new area code will require new phone numbers to be issued in the new 270 area.
