 760 becomes mandatory September 27th
The 760 area code was created through a split of the 619 area code in March of 1997.
The new 760 area code is expected to accommodate the need for new phone numbers for about eight years, while the reconfigured 619 area code is expected to have enough telephone numbers to last until May 1999.
A group of city and county government officials from the affected areas proposed the area code boundaries, which were later approved by the Commission.

The new area code taking on portions of the 805 territory is expected to be in use by early 1999.

Lottery some phone companies, such as wireless ones, are issued an entire prefix at a time when they need numbers because they do not have the technology needed to manage portions of a prefix.
Since phone numbers are in high demand and supplies dwindle rapidly when 10,000 numbers are issued at a time, the Commission rations how many blocks of 10,000 numbers are given out and, these companies compete for the numbers through a lottery.
