		Area code 213 was one of the first three area codes created in California in October 1947.
		The subdivisions to date are area code 310, area code 323, area code 562, area code 619, area code 626, area code 661, area code 714, area code 760, area code 805, area code 818, area code 858, area code 909, area code 949, and area code 951.
		Each of those area codes has a "1" in the middle because at that time only states that had more than one area code were assigned areas codes with a 1 in the midddle.

		Area code 714 is an area code for telephone dialing which encompasses northern and eastern Orange County, California and a small sliver of Los Angeles County, California (La Mirada).
		It once included the whole of the county (except for La Habra and Seal Beach, which have always been in the same area code as Long Beach—currently the 562 area code).
		However, in the mid-1990s, the southern and western cities (including nearly all of the more affluent municipalities in the county) were given the area code 949.

		The 657 area code is the third overlay approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for the state, and the second overlay for Southern California.
		Joe Cocke, NANPA's senior area code relief planner for the Western Region, including California, said the introduction of the new 657 area code is needed to meet the rapidly growing demand for additional telephone numbers in the 714 area code.
		Area code relief activities for the 714 and 657 area codes are administered by CIS, which was selected by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve as the NANPA.

	LincMad Proposal for Orange County
		The third proposal is an overlay, in which the new area code would cover the same territory as the 714 area code.
		When all four of the resulting area codes almost immediately came up for further relief, the Texas PUC decided to erase the most recent splits and implement overlays that cover the "inner" and "outer" portions of each metropolitan area.
		In Illinois, an overlay was recently approved for area code 847 in the northern suburbs of Chicago, but with the explicit option of later expanding the overlay to cover some of the other area codes in the region.

		On April 18, much of south county and half of Costa Mesa were taken out of the 714 area code and given the 949 code.
		The rest of the county is 714, except for a slice including Seal Beach and Los Alamitos that uses 562.

		"Historically, area codes always had either a "1" or a "0" as the middle digit for identification purposes, but all of those codes have been used." These new number combinations allow area codes to be any three digits from 220 to 999, creating an additional 5 billion telephone numbers nationwide, Bennett said.

		Several communities located along the new 714/949 split line border would be served by both area codes, meaning part of the community would stay 714 and part would receive the new 949.
