	Area code 760 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		North American area code 760 is a state of California telephone area code which encompasses much of the eastern portion of the state, as well as a great deal of Southern California.
		The area code includes Imperial, Inyo, and Mono Counties, as well as portions of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Kern Counties.
		760 was created in March 1997 out of what were then parts of the area codes 714 and 619.

		North American Area code 909 is is a California telephone area code which was split from area code 714 on November 14, 1992.
		The areas east of the San Gorgonio Pass and northeast of the San Bernardino Mountains were moved into area code 760 on March 22, 1997, and western Riverside County was split off from 909 into area code 951 on July 17, 2004.
		The 909 area code now covers far eastern Los Angeles County and southwestern San Bernardino County, California.

		The new area code was scheduled to be implemented on October 21, 2000, with mandatory dialing of the new area code to begin on April 14, 2001.

		A new area code is needed in the 760 calling area, Cocke said, because of an increase in competition in the local phone service market, the growing demand for additional telephone numbers, and a technical requirement in the phone network that allocates phone numbers in blocks of 10,000.
		Area code relief activities for the 760 and 442 area codes are administered by CIS, which was selected by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve as the NANPA.
		NANPA is a neutral, third-party administrator that works with the telecommunications industry in developing area code relief plans and also oversees the assignment of area codes, three-digit central office codes, carrier identification codes, and other numbering resources throughout the United States, Canada, Bermuda and 16 Caribbean countries.

	CPUC Approves Split For 760 Area Code
		The Commission decided to split the area, rather than use an overlay where two area codes serve the same area, because it is a large area, making it rather easy to split and still keep communities of interest together.
		The geographic area currently served by the 760 code extends east and southeast from the beach in northern San Diego County, to the Nevada, Arizona and Mexican borders.
		Callers from other areas will be able to reach consumers in the area served by the new area code by dialing the old or the new area code and then the seven-digit number.
