		The telephone area code 773 was formed in the city of Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1996.
		The entire city of Chicago—and all of Chicagoland—were originally area code 312, but eventually the city itself was split between 312 in the Downtown/Loop and surrounding areas, and 773, comprising the vast physical majority of the city and all outlying areas within city limits.
		The area code has also been popularized by a series of t-shirts with the slogan "773 FOREVER", a reflection of residents' strong sense of pride and attachment to the area and their identification with urban living over the suburbs.

		Area code 312 encompasses the Chicago Loop and surrounding areas in Chicago, Illinois.
		312 was one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947, then called "Numbering Plan Areas." With the rotary dialing technology available at the time, care was given to keep the number of "clicks" to a minimum for large cities, hence Chicago being assigned a code with only six clicks.
		In 1996, most of the city split off into 773 after the northern suburbs and western suburbs split into area codes 847 and 630 respectively.

		Yea in areas like the suburbs of chicago, the phone company desided to overlay two area codes into one large area, instead of just making two smaller ones.
