The altitude at which the arecanut palm can, be successfully grown varies to some extent according, to the latitude of the place.
The range of temperature at which it can flourish is from about 15' to 38' C. Areca thrives well in a variety of soils, the laterite soils of the West Coast, the red loamy soils of the Mettupalayam (Tamil Wadu), the alluvial of Assam and West Bengal and the loans of Orissa.
Arecanut is consumed both as a raw/ripe nut (adaka or Kacha tamul) as dried ripe nut (chali supari) and as semi-mature cut and processed varieties 'Batoldike" or 'Kalipak'.

According to Arecanut and Spices Database, prepared by the Kozhikode-based Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, shows that Indonesia exported 39,564 tonnes of arecanut to India during 2005-06, whereas the total production of the commodity stood at 42,000 tonnes during 2004 there.
In 2005-06, Bangladesh exported 8,041 tonnes of arecanut, Thailand 3,088 tonnes and Myanmar 1,277 tonnes.
While the arecanut imports witnessed a steady growth from 2001-02 to 2005-06, the unit value for the commodity came down each year.

If the tariff rate is fixed at the current production cost — say Rs 60 a kg — the importer would have to pay that amount plus the amount at which he imports the commodity.
