Arecibo Observatory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arecibo telescope is distinguished by its enormous size; the main collecting dish is 305 m in diameter, constructed inside the depression left by a karst sinkhole.
The Arecibo telescope's dish surface is made of 38,778 perforated aluminium panels, each measuring about 1 m by 2 m (3 ft by 6 ft), supported by a mesh of steel cables.
Arecibo was also the source of data for the SETI@home distributed computing project put forward by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley.

Arecibo random-code data from late 1992 also reveal a backscatter enhancement from the north polar ice cap which is slightly weaker than the south polar echo at the same wavelength.
Arecibo random-code reflectivity maps from 1990 indicate that the main channel of Ares Vallis southeast of the lander site is moderately (on rock scales) than the terrain through which it flows, but neither it nor the lander site itself are unusually rough in an absolute sense.
DSN Goldstone system, Arecibo will be very much the dominant instrument in the field although the limitated declination coverage of the Arecibo antenna means that the Goldstone system will continue to play an important role in providing both coverage at declinations outside Arecibo's coverage and measurement of wavelength dependent properties.

Cosmic radio signals are so weak, in fact, that all the energy collected by all the radio telescopes on our planet during the 60+ year history of radio astronomy amounts to no more than the energy released when a few raindrops hit the ground.
An enormously sensitive collector of radio waves, such as the giant Arecibo radio-radar telescope, was needed to capture these signals.

Although Arecibo can indeed transmit at 2380 MHz, I have chosen the H1 frequency of 1420 MHz [7] as being more realistic for SETI, on the long-standing grounds that it may well be the obvious choice of other intelligent civilizations.
If Arecibo could hear Arecibo at 100,000 LY, we reasoned, then small TV dishes (equipped, of course, with state-of-the-art receivers and digital signal processors) should be able to hear Arecibo at a range of 1,000 LY.

When we last heard from the receiver engineering team at Arecibo earlier this year (see "A New Receiver for SETI@home", February 21, 2002), they were just putting the finishing touches on a revamped SETI receiver.

The SETI LO box at Arecibo was located 20 feet away from the receiver, and connected to it by a cable.

ARECIBO, PUERTO RICO -- Fitted with its new compound eye on the heavens, the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Arecibo Observatory telescope, the world's largest and most sensitive single-dish radio telescope, early tomorrow morning begins a years-long survey of distant galaxies, perhaps discovering elusive "dark galaxies" -- galaxies that are devoid of stars.
Astronomers at Arecibo Observatory hope the new sky survey will result in a comprehensive census of galaxies out to a distance of 800 million light years from our galaxy, the Milky Way, in nearly one-sixth of the sky -- or some 7,000 square degrees.
The search, conducted by an international team of students and scholars, is the first of a series of large-scale Arecibo surveys that will take advantage of a the telescope's new instrument, installed last year, called ALFA (for Arecibo L-Band Feed Array).
