Arecidae --  Encyclopædia Britannica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The Arecidae, the smallest and least homogeneous subclass in the angiosperms, includes four orders, of which three have only a single family and the fourth has three families.
The Palmae have the longest and most extensive fossil record of any family of the subclass Arecidae, extending some 80 million years ago to the middle Late Cretaceous.
The Palmae are structurally the most diverse and also the most distinctive group in the subclass.

The subclass Arecidae comprises only 6 families and 5,600 species.
The Arecidae are morphologically and ecologically diverse and include the smallest known angiosperm - the aquatic Wolffia - as well as giant palms.
Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that the Arecidae is an unnatural subclass.

Chapter 5: Evolution and the fossil record
Thus, the study of palms may be valuable in interpreting monocotyledonous evolution.
It has been suggested that the palms, like the other families in the Arecidae, may represent a fragment of an early monocotyledonous radiation.
However, the Palmae was separated earlier than the other families and has developed more specialized features, although within its own special constraints.

Pollen evidence suggests the taxon was much more widespread historically than it is currently and probably arose in the Upper Cretaceous.
As already noted under the introduction to Cronquist's Arecidae, the Pandanales and Cyclanthales are unrelated to the Arecales, sharing a much closer relationship with the Arales in their own subclass, the Aridae.
