  Encyclopedia: Areito
The Spanish documented that the Casica Anacaona was famous for her compositions and choreography for the Areitos.
Areito were round dances and recitation ceremonies, where thanksgivings were made for various natural and plant spirits, and the ancient stories were told.
There were Areitos and cemis for the season of Huracan, singings for the four beings, for the origin of the sun and moon, the ocean and fishes, the snake and jutia, for the guayaba, the ceiba, the corn, the name and the yucca.

However, areito is one of the traditional and ritualistic dances accompanied by song that is said to have been practiced by the Indians that settled these Bahama Islands.
The song and dance of the areito seems similar to that of the ring dance that is still done by children here in the Bahamas.
Below is a copy of an areito that survived over the years and is secured in the National Archives of Cuba.

Flamenco Olivar and Areito Borincano are using live music in their Nations performances, as are three other troupes – Omo Aché Afro-Cuban Dance Company, Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts, and Hoofers House.
Omo Aché and Areito Borincano both draw on rhythms brought to the Caribbean by African slaves, rhythms that survived because of an essential difference between U.S. and Caribbean slaveholders: in the Caribbean, slaves were allowed to make drums.
Areito Borincano regularly brings Puerto Rican teachers here, and about half the company traveled to Puerto Rico over the holidays to study with top choreographer Elia Cortes and her drummers.

 Areito ~ Pre-Columbian Culture ~ Salsa Roots ~ Salsa Culture ~ JustSalsa.com
When Christopher Columbus arrived in Cuba in 1492 one of the cultural expressions he found was the "Areito" a simple yet sweet music made by the native Taino people.
In the Areito the people would sing and dance, in a circle with their arms intertwined, to the sound of a drum.
The beating of the Atambor was accompanied by conch shell horns and an instrument made from a gourd filled with small stones.

Like many of the young exiles associated with Areito, Casal actively worked against the Castro government until she left the country after the attempted U.S. Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961.
She is one of a small number of former opponents who have been allowed to return to Cuba for brief visits, which she has described in Areito.
She estimated that perhaps a quarter of exiles under 25 might support Areito's position of "an openness toward Cuba and a sympathy with revolutionary goals," if not all of Castro's methods.

With the Puerto Rican community's presence dwarfed by larger Latino communities, Areito Borincano's performances are for many San Diegans their first introduction to Puerto Rican culture.
Areito Borincano's name pays homage to "Boriken," the name indigenous Taino Indians called the island before the Spanish colonized it, and an ancient ritual they practiced.
For others involved in Areito Borincano, their membership means re-connecting with the Puerto Rico they've missed, or learning what they've never known, while living in the United States.

Because indigenous groups on Cuba became extinct shortly after the start of Spanish colonization, current scholarly knowledge about the formal and ritual aspects of areito is sketchy and often suppositional.
According to early Spanish colonial writings, the music often involved hundreds, even thousands of participants, who would dance in concentric circles around a group of musicians who played güiros, maracas and slit-drums.
Accordingly, its example provides a historiological prism through which to study areito music rather than an authentic record of it.

Latin Beat Magazine: How the Timbal Recovered Its Natural Voice: The Poetic Magic of Amadito Valdés - Entrevista
This concept was presented by an African record producer, Raúl Diomandé, who thought that a much better all-star aggregation could be assembled in Havana by congregating a series of renowned figures of the 1940s and 1950s, including such instrumental icons as Tata Güines, Enrique Jorrín and Richard Egües.
EGREM's Areito label assigned Juan Pablo Torres to organize this project, and he gathered the direct heirs of the descarga modality, but within a different format.
The 1950s descargas were recorded by smaller instrumental formats, whereas Estrellas de Areito covered the entire spectrum of Cuban music, from charanga to conjunto to big band.

Brought together by African musical impresario Raoul Diomandé, and under the direction of trombonist Juan Pablo Torres, these 30 "stars" poured their hearts into a series of long, energetic tracks (running 7 to 15 minutes apiece) that burn up the aluminum on the two CDs they are now housed on.
"Estrellas de Areito" means "Stars of Areito" in English, referring to the fact that the albums were originally released on Areito, a Cuban government label.
The performances are a little repititious, but this is more than compensated by the spirited vocals and wonderful solos by Ruben Gonzalez, Arturo Sandoval, Nino Rivera, Paquito D'Rivera and other worthy souls, some of whom would later defect to the USA.

Two recent releases speak to distinct but intertwined realms of that singular musical legacy.
Seeing Cuban music being capitalized upon abroad, island musicians responded with the Estrellas de Areito project, a 1979 studio descarga that assembled three generations of masters to confirm the continued vitality of Afro-Cuban music in situ.
The 30-odd Areito all-stars logged five days in the studio, producing enough material for several albums geared to a keen African salsa market.
