Henry Schoolcraft name Arenac county from the ancient words "arena", meaning a place sanded for gladiators to give them proper footing, and the Indian word "ac", meaning "place of".
In 1819 most of the county was ceded to the US Government, but Chippewa reservations remained near the mouths of AuGres and Rifle rivers until they were ceded in 1837.
Within this county is the city of Omer, which is known as the smallest cities in Michigan.

Arenac officials have taken the approach that benefit is defined by drainage.
Officials from the other counties say this method fails to consider the benefits for which the drain was originally built -- to prevent flooding of Arenac lands.

Arenac County has sent letters to all governmental units involved in STING telling them that they (the governmental units) will be liable if the dispute goes to court.
Although Arenac County says they want to participate in STING they are insisting on a two-year free pass on contributions to get back the money they claim they are owed.

 Oscoda Press: Drain board says ‘No thanks' to state grant money
Arenac County Drain Commissioner Donald Prueter cast the lone vote against turning down the grant.
The Arenac County Road Mission had pledged $200,000 in stone for the project and a WIN grant of $28,000 in addition to $28,000 of in-kind services by the drain commissioners left about $161,000 for the grant match.
That point was argued by Pauline Hall, Arenac County commissioner who said officials within her county have looked for additional funding.

Richard Cameron, who was the head of the household for the Cameron family after moving from Canada to Michigan, participated in the formation of Adams Township (for Arenac County).
The struggle to form Adams township was significant because Bay County resisted the loss of its territory to Arenac County all of the way to the Michigan Supreme Court.
Land Transactions: The transaction of the deed from Daniel Stowell, et al, and Richard Cameron began in the Province of Quebec on May 25, 1988 (on an Arenac County form) and recorded on April 14, 1891 by Harvey A. Chamberlain, Register of Deeds.

Family Independence Agency (FIA) director Douglas E. Howard announced today the appointment of Kathy Cholak-Jones as acting director of Arenac County FIA which is now a dual county along with Bay County FIA.
Her appointment supercedes the previous announcement that Mark Stevens would be acting director at the dual county agency.
As acting director of Arenac and Bay counties, she will be responsible for the administration of federal cash assistance and food assistance programs, as well as child and adult services programs including protective services, adult services, adoption services and foster care services.
