 Arenal Volcano Costa Rica overview
Arenal was constructed by successive eruptions to the NW (10.463°N (10°27'48"N), 84.703°W (84°42'12"W)) of the older Chato volcano, which contains a 500 meters wide summit crater.
Arenal eruptions are of the strombolian type (name after the volcano Stromboli in Italy: A type of volcanic activity which produces frequent, moderate eruptions.
This part of the volcano's "plumbing system" acts as a temporary storage reservoir and is usually sited beneath the summit of the volcano at depths of less than 5 km (1 km =.62 mile, or roughly 2/3 of a mile).

Young deposits were of the slopes of the volcano but it had not erupted in historic time.
Strombolian eruptions occur at Arenal at intervals of several minutes to hours.
