Dear Viv,John Larking was not the builder of Clare House at East Malling.
He was involved with the area and there are three records that reveal his involvement including one for bankruptcy. The location of these records can be seen at:www.a2a.org.uk.The first Viscount Chilston was formerly named Aretas Akers-Douglas,so I don't think there was a family link.Best wishes,Mike Baker.
I am interested in the history of the namesake of the Forest of Dean.

Salisbury had been described as an “ideological backwoodsman”
It is also ironic that Salisbury is dominant in the Conservative party: he is reclusive and despises his party: it is only because of his Chief Whip, Aretas Akers-Douglas, that he managed it.
Democracy is his fatalism: he accepts it because it allows him to operate in the age of mass politics.
It may not be out of place to record, that although the immediate male descendants of the first baronet are all deceased, the old family, which was settled for centuries in the neighborhood of Tenterden, is not extinct, but is now represented by the humble individual who writes this paper.
The first baronet had two brothers, the elder of whom, William Hales of Bowley and Chilston (a place now owned by Aretas Akers-Douglas, Esquire, M.P., a member of our Society), was married to Margaret, daughter of Ralph Heyman, of Tenterden.
His elder son John, being impecunious, sold those estates to the baronet's family.
