Falklands War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The war was triggered by the occupation of South Georgia by Argentine forces on 19 March 1982 followed by the occupation of the Falklands, and ended with Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982.
Argentine intelligence officers had been working with the CIA to help fund the Contras in Nicaragua, and the Argentine government believed it might be rewarded for this activity by non-interference on the part of the U.S. if it invaded the Falklands.
The Argentine loss of the War led to ever-larger protests against the military regime and is credited with giving the final push to drive out the military government that had overthrown Isabel Perón in 1976 and participated in the crimes of the Dirty War.

The ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (V-2) was an aircraft carrier in the Armada Republica Argentina from 1969 to 1999.
During the Falklands War, the Veinticinco de Mayo was deployed in a task force north of the Falkland Islands, with the ARA General Belgrano to the south.
In 1983, the Veinticinco de Mayo was modified to operate the newly Dassault Super Étendard jets but soon later, problems in her engines largely confined to port and was more or less unseaworthy.

HMS Conqueror (S48) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She was ordered to scan the area for Argentine shipping, particularly the Argentine aircraft carrier, ARA Veinticinco de Mayo.
The basis for the decision was that the Royal Navy feared a pincer-style attack with Belgrano attacking from the south, and the Veinticinco de Mayo from the north.
The crew of the submarine had to face Argentine Air Force attempts to locate the ship in the days after the attack, which had shocked the Argentine people and ruling dictatorship.

Britain\rquote s carrier streng th was limited and it did not yet have early-warning radar aircraft, both of which meant that its ability to achieve air supremacy could not be taken for granted.
He believed that the Argentine Navy\rquote s familiarity with United States strategy would lead them to assume that such a landing would be made the American way, going straight for the main target and relying on superior fire power to protect the landing force.

A-4_Skyhawk - The real meaning from Timesharetalk wikipedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The aircraft is of conventional post-WW2 design, with a low-mounted delta-like wing, tricycle undercarriage, and a single turbojet engine in the rear fuselage, with intakes on the fuselage sides.
This allowed the aircraft to be used as a tanker for others of the same type, removing the need for entirely different tanker aircraft - a particular advantage for small air arms or when operating in remote locations.
This worked by designating a tanker aircraft and fitting it with a centre-mounted "buddy store" that was a large external fuel tank with a hose reel in the aft section and an extensible drogue type refuelling bucket.

 Argentine Aircraft in the Falklands
The Argentine Navy organized a combined strike against the British aircraft carriers: eight A-4Qs belonging to the 3rd Air Naval Fighter and Strike Squadron on board the Argentine carrier, ARA Veinticinco de Mayo, and two Super Etendards from Río Grande Air Naval Base would attack at the same time on May 2nd.
The aircraft were piloted by Corvette Captain Roberto Agotegaray and Warship Lieutenant Juan Rodríguez Mariani, who took off in the first hours of the evening, and the meeting with the KC-130H was completed without problems, but when both planes reached the target area they did not find anything.
Many specialists said that the Argentine pilots misidentified the small flight deck of the anti-submarine helicopter with the flight deck of the carrier, and wrongly thought that the smoke of the curtain was cause by the Exocet hit.

Finally, the Veinticinco De Mayo was laid up in 1993, plans to refit her for further service never materialised and in December 1998 she left Argentina bound for the scrapyard at Alang, India.

The Argentine commitment of military forces to UN peacekeeping operations has meant that from early 1994 until mid-1995, when Argentine contributions were at their highest, Argentina contributed about 2 percent of "blue helmets" at a time when UN forces were at their peak around the world.
Argentine participation in UN operations became a constant on the international scene in a wide variety of contexts.
The Argentine peacekeeping efforts have modified perspectives on security at both the regional and hemispheric levels, and the likelihood is that this will continue to be the case, particularly in the naval realm.

British commanders were convinced the Argentine fleet was engaged in a menacing pincer movement led by the aircraft carrier, Veinticinco de Mayo, in the north and the Belgrano in the south.

While aircraft carriers enable the projection of airpower well beyond a nation’s shores without reliance on host-nation support, they have a major problem: they are expensive.
It does not claim to be definitive but seeks to inform, highlighting in particular the manner in which the aircraft carrier has returned to the core of British military thinking as Britain adjusts to the conditions likely to pertain in the first two decades of the twenty-first century.
The aircraft (as the Eurofighter) was meant to serve with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy; the vigorous disputes over which country should lead the design led to the project’s first acronym, FEFA (Future European Fighter Aircraft), being rendered in some aviation journals in unflattering ways.

The Argentine defenders resisted with courage and tenacity and the assault degenerated into brutal hand-to-hand combat, with the defence trenches being cleared by bullet, grenade and bayonet.

That country's rhetoric traditionally claimed the islands as Argentine property, and in early 1982, the military junta under Gen. Leopoldo Galtieri moved swiftly to occupy the islands.
Once the British troops were ashore, the outcome was not in doubt, even though the Argentines had a three-to-one numerical advantage and the British had to hike 65 miles into combat -- Galtieri, not expecting a real fight, had dumped his men ashore, but not positioned or provisioned them adequately.
The Argentines surrendered at Port Stanley on June 14, and the eventual political fallout from the brief war ended Galtieri's regime and boosted Thatcher's.
