The city has a few plateias, the Port of Argostoli which includes a small ferry to Lixouri, hotels, and the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli.

Even though many of the town’s imposing mansions were destroyed during the 1953 earthquakes, the new town which was built kept the quaint, Ionian style with well-laid out streets, spacious squares, many trees and alleys and a very lively port.
From the few works of the island’s British period which the earthquakes didn’t destroy is Koutavos bridge, built in 1813, which connects Argostoli with the opposite coast.

North out of Argostoli, via Farsa (where Louis de Bernières found inspiration for "Captain Corelli's Mandolin"), and west onto the peninsular, to the main town of Lixouri, to the west are many small mountain villages well worth exploring, and the beaches of Petani in the north, and Xi (with its red sand) in the south.
In Argostoli, the newly re-opened Archaeological Museum is worth a visit, but even better value is the Folk Museum (housed beneath the Library), which is crammed full of historical dress, artefacts, documents, and many pre and post-'53 earthquake pictures.
One in the centre of the town itself re-created wartime Argostoli (complete with the still existing statue of P. Valianos in the central square), and we witnessed (from afar) some of the destruction being wrought on the set (machine-guns, fire and smoke).

The later, situated beneath the library is a much more varied collection for the visitor to the island,exhibiting artefacts mainly relating to 19th century life on the island.
The venetian kastro of St George (once the capital of the island) is 9 km south of Argostoli, and is definitely worth a visit.
