'Argot' was not a different language in the same sense as the regional languages, in that it did not have a different phonological system, or different syntax.
In the case of 'argot' the special lexicon is grafted on to the syntax of French, the language of the dominant social group.
If the forms of the words used in 'argot' were no longer secret, the words could nevertheless be used by the criminal classes as the basis for a coded message, with alternative meanings attached to a particular form.

Argot takes the meaning of secret language of the underworld by the end of the 17th century and this definition will remain unchanged until the end of the 19th century.
In the 1950s Guiraud described the evolution of argot from the secret language of the underworld to a social variety of language consisting of a special vocabulary that enables its users to shaw that they are different from most speakers and belong to a given group or community.
The term argot commun first used by François-Geiger refers to lexical items on their way from argot to colloquial speech and seems to be quite close to slang as the latter has been characterized by Partridge.

A single Argot file or message can contain data, the data dictionary, which describes the format of the data, and a meta dictionary which describes the format of the data dictionary.
The receiver of an Argot enabled file is able to read the dictionary and compare the data types of its own dictionary with that of the files.

Lunfardo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lunfardo was a colorful, slangy argot of the Spanish language which developed at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century in the lower classes in and around Buenos Aires.
It should be noted that Italian immigrant spoke their regional dialects and not standard Italian; other words arrived from the pampa by means of the gauchos; a small number originated in Argentina's fl population.
Circa 1900, the word lunfardo itself (originally a deformation of lombardo in several Italian dialects) was used to mean "outlaw".

jmb 5.1 (jun 2004): awofeso, prison argot and penal discipline
I therefore hypothesize that the extent of uniqueness of prison argot, compared with the language commonly spoken by inmates’ peer groups outside prison settings, constitutes proxy indicators of the harshness of penal discipline, and the social distance between prisoners and the general community.
Under such circumstances, prison argot is likely to become revitalized, as it would be needed to cement inmates’ solidarity and lessen their ‘pains of imprisonment’ in the face of increasing hostility by custodial authorities.
As the meanings of argot terms are commonly context-specific, intelligence-gathering personnel of prisons need to include the deciphering of argot terms in their areas as an integral aspect of their surveillance activities.

The thinker who refuses to ignore the argot is like the surgeon who ignores an ulcer or a wart.
For the people who still ignore its meaning, argot is a conjunction between a literary phenomenon and its social consequence.

Detailed Reviews [Thieves' Kitchen - 2001 - "Argot"] - ProgressoR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
So, "Argot" is the second Thieves' Kitchen album (the first one was released about a year ago and my review on it is here, and now I want to say what I have to say just in the Summary of the review (as it has always been before).
Consisting of only four tracks, two of which are the so called 'side long' pieces, Thieves' Kitchen's "Argot" actually contains no less than 40 (and quite diverse, by the way) songs that most of the Neo bands would be happy to include in their '4 future albums'.
So it is really pleasant to hear how wise (at least musically) these relatively very young musicians are since they work in a masterly fashion being just in the beginning of their (hopefully, long and fruitful) musical career.

It is also important to point out that argot -according to its modern definition- cannot be considered the property of one given social layer or class, and unlike non-standard varieties such as la langue populaire, does not have a particular phonetic or syntactic system.
It is either the meaning of an apparently everyday word that is altered or the original shape of the old item is hidden by the transformation of its form.
Inspite of certain particularities, the linguistic and extralinguistic factors that characterize French argot have a lot in common with those characterizing for instance Hungarian slang, which underlines the importance of the study of slang universals.

ARGOT was the University of Rochester Computer Science department's first attempt to explore the mechanics of dialogue.

In the background is our sign for TRAINS, the project that formed our later exploration of dialogue.

And since law-breakers in all societies tend to develop thieves' argots, that is, private languages that help hide their activities from the outside world, it was entirely natural for Polish criminals to borrow Hebrew/Yiddish vocabulary from Jews that other Poles would not understand.
It would make sense that their cooperation, like that between Jewish and Polish criminals, would be reflected in their slang, especially since Mizrahim who immigrated from Arab countries are disproportionately represented among criminals in Israel.
It's interesting how criminal's argot can act as a transmitter of words between languages.
