Evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The belief in a telelogical evolution of this sort is known as orthogenesis, and is not supported by the scientific understanding of evolution.
The claim that evolution results in moral progress is not part of modern evolutionary theory – that claim is associated with Social Darwinism, which held that the subjugation of the poor, and of minority groups, was favored by evolution.
Here is the "tree of life" showing the evolution by reassortment of H5N1 that created the Z genotype in 2002 and here is evolution by antigenic drift that created dozens of highly pathogenic varieties of the Z genotype of avian flu virus H5N1, some of which are increasingly adopted to mammals.

Argument from evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Evolution is commonly accepted by biologists because of extensive testing of its premises and predictions, whereas ID has not been and cannot be tested because of its theistic basis and reliance on a supernatural causer/prime mover.
A common misconception is that evolution is an argument against the existence of God, but evolution does not conflict with a belief in God, in fact, evolution does not deal in any way with the existence or non-existence of a god or gods.
Chance certainly plays a large part in evolution, but this argument completely ignores the fundamental role of natural selection, and selection is the very opposite of chance.

Arthur O. Lovejoy: The Argument for Organic Evolution Before The Origin of Species I   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The basis of the doctrine of evolution consists, not in an experimental demonstration—for the subject is hardly accessible to this mode of proof—but in its general harmony with scientific thought.
Argument from the Homologies in Vertebrates.—This argument was, by 1844, already so old and even hackneyed a one, that it may, in a consideration of the status of the evolutionary argument at that special period, be passed over very briefly.
Organic evolution had been held to be true by certain thinkers during many centuries; but not only were its adherents entirely without a sufficient motive cause, but their evidences of the process itself were erroneous or extremely scanty.

Turning to the fossil record as proof of evolution, and proof of the antiquity of the earth, there are more problems.
Evolution demands that its subscribers believe fossils were sediment encased over millions of years, but research shows the record is evidence of the rapid death and burial of animal and plant life.

 The Flagellum Unspun
For the intelligent design argument to stand, this must be the case, since it provides the basis for their claim that only the complete flagellum can be favored by natural selection, not any its component parts.
When anti-evolutionary arguments featuring the bacterial flagellum rose into prominence, beginning with the 1996 publication of Darwin's Black Box (Behe 1996a), they were predicated upon the assertion that each of the protein components of the flagellum were crafted, in a single act of design, to fit the specific purpose of the flagellum.

Evolution theory is based on genetics and the changes that occur at the molecular level, including discussions of quantum effects (see e.g., Roger Penrose or David Deutsch.) Gould doesn't discuss any of this.

Normative Arguments against the Theory of Evolution Creationists advance two types of arguments against the theory of evolution: one that concludes that evolution is a false depiction of reality, and another that argues that the theory of evolution, if true, should not be believed because of the morally bad consequences to such a belief.
Evolution seems to deny the personal worth, and even the personality of each individual; as Moore’s argument indicates, we become just another species of animal that is caught in the process of evolution.
Admittedly, this argument has some serious problems, such as the role of freedom/determinism in the collapsed world of the creationist and the chance that reason could be a useless organ that somehow managed to survive the pressures of natural selection.

 Evolution
Evolution is a scientific theory that has explained the factual evidence of scientists for more than a century.
Evolution is not merely a common theory or "only a theory" as some people state in their commentaries.
Evolution is a scientific theory because it is based on an abundance of empirical data, even though the precise mechanisms remain open to tests, revision, and tentative acceptance or rejection.

The Evolution, Creationism, and Intelligent Design Controversy
Jones found ID's "irreducible complexity" argument to be "a negative argument against evolution, not proof of design."  Five Major Misconceptions about Evolution
The Creationists wrongly believe that their understanding of evolution is what the theory of evolution really says, and declare evolution banished.
The argument rests on a confusion between what "theory" means in informal usage and in a scientific context.
Evolution is supported by a wide range of observations throughout the fields of genetics, anatomy, ecology, animal behavior, paleontology, and others.

Thus the power of the creationist argument: evolution is 'only' a theory and intense debate now rages about many aspects of the theory.

Pseudogenes: Argument for Evolution and Against Design?
If evolution were true, it would be expected that some of these duplicated genes would undergo mutation that could render them useless.
Naturalistic evolution could, in theory, produce some of the changes in structures that would account for some of the phenotypic differences observed between the old and new species.
If evolution were the mechanism by which species arose, deleterious mutations would continue to accumulate as new species evolved.

 Argument: Probability of evolution
Evolution is a pseudo-intellectual justification for materialism, because it purports to explain life without God.
Chance plays a part in evolution (for example, in the random mutations that can give rise to new traits), but evolution does not depend on chance to create organisms, proteins, or other entities.
It is misleading to claim that evolution does not depend on chance but instead it relies on ‘non-random’ natural selection.

 Argument from Evolution
Draper defends an evidential argument from evolution for metaphysical naturalism, a hypothesis that entails atheism.
Gerkin takes the classic theistic Argument to Design from William Paley's Natural Theology, "the watchmaker analogy," argues that it is logically flawed as an argument for theism, then turns it on its head and reformulates it as an argument for atheism, incorporating an atheological argument from biological evolution.
Though a lay exposition geared at a general audience, the essay appeals to a variety of atheistic arguments, including the argument from religious confusion, an evidential argument from evil, divine hiddenness, the argument from biological evolution, and the argument from physical minds.

 Pharyngula::"...in the light of evolution."
There's an article that mentions this...'observation'...in an article by the creationist Jerry Bergman, which is full of nonsense claiming that evolution is not really important in biology after all.
Note also that the article on Yale's evolution requirement is all about an administrative decision to split an existing department into two, and the article is full of quotes from professors who are concerned that this will make it more difficult for students to get that essential background in evolutionary biology.
Sure, you can do a multiple sequence alignment without understanding evolution, but no creationist would have ever come up with the idea, nor would they have the slightest idea what to do with one.

The Continuum Argument for Evolution: A Critique
The difficulty Pictet has with the evolution of the wing is answered by the assertion that the wing somehow did evolve.
The fallacy behind the argument is that although we may not be able to specify exactly what divides legitimate drug usage from illegitimate drug usage, it does not follow that there is no difference between drinking caffeine and using LSD.
There are no limits to the Continuum Argument, as is ironically demonstrated by criticisms of biochemist Michael Behe's case for the irreducible complexity of biological systems at the molecular level.

FAQ: Is ID just a negative argument against evolution?
Intelligent design is not merely a negative argument against evolution, but is inferred because of its positive predictions of how we understand designers to operate.
If this appears as a "negative argument against evolution" it is only because this unique test case of irreducible complexity is a strong prediction of intelligent design (due to the high complex-specified information content of irreducible complexity) and just happens to be anti-predicted by a competing hypothesis, Darwinian evolution.
Design proponents do not argue against evolution merely because that is what proves design, but because in these special cases, the falsification of evolution also entails a matched positive prediction of intelligent design theory, because intelligent design predicts the exact opposite of evolution.

Dennis Trumble may be mistaken, however, in presenting as an argument against creationism that "physical adaptations to environmental pressures have been documented in hundreds of modern species." Adaptive change within species is not in itself evidence that species are descended from other species.
His discussion of the absence of fossil evidence of "missing links" as a form of argumentum ad ignorantiam, however, may be too erudite for the average creationist.

Teaching Evolution: The Argument Is Not About Science
Darwinian evolution has nothing to do with science and everything to do with establishing atheistic socialism as the official national religion.
In sharp distinction to Darwinian evolution, the only part of biology that is truly scientific is taxonomic description and classification of life forms into family, genus, and species.
Darwinian evolution, unlike true sciences such as chemistry and physics, cannot be employed to predict anything or to make exact classifications of anything.

Evolution’s “Useless Organ” Argument : Christian Courier
According to the advocates of evolution, many of earth’s creatures have within their bodies certain structures which are entirely useless.
First, arguments of this nature are simply groundless speculations born of the desire to find some evidence for evolution.
It is thus quite apparent that the argument for evolution, based upon the existence of so-called vestigial organs, is simply insufficient to establish the case.

However, an assertion about what a designer would do is actually a pseudo-theological argument, not a scientific argument that mutations and natural selection could produce this unique developmental pattern.
