  Argus C3
The Argus C differed from both the C-2 and the C-3 as its rangefinder was not coupled to the lens.
A photographer shooting an Argus C would use the rangefinder to determine the distance from the film plane to the subject and then set the focus by setting the calibrated lens to the same distance setting.
The Argus C-3 was the first brick to feature its own flash unit, with attached to the left side of the camera by way of two sockets into which the prongs of the flashbulb gun were inserted.

After my twin brother and I were born, dad bought one of the marvels of 35mm photography in 1953, the famous and ubiquitous Argus C3 Bakelite "brick." We lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana, not all that far from where it was made.
It's what most parents have done during this century: buy a new camera as soon as the first ankle-biter is hatched to document for all posterity the antics of their proud progeny.
The slide mounts are marked with apertures, shutter speeds and the ones taken using a flash have the focus distance as well.

 Matt's Cameras: Argus C3
The C3 is more versatile than you would think at first glance; the lenses are actually interchangable and you could realistically build a kit around the Brick.
This 'fixed' C3 isn't as pretty now as the other one - not that it was to begin with - but it works much better now, and takes great pictures.
My chief complaints about the C3 are the tiny viewfinder and rangefinder windows, and the fact that my finger always seems to get in the way of the shutter lever, which is right on the front of the camera where I'm used to gripping it.

Argus C3 As one of the best selling cameras ever the C3 can be found very easily in the US and very cheaply at that.
To use the brick is to take a step back in time and the C3 was far from a point and shoot; it takes some education and knowledge to get an accurate shot out of the brick but hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic, American amateurs tried and many succeeded.
The C3 was never cutting edge technology even when first released but after a few years of production it was starting to look very dated especially in comparison to some of the competing models coming from Germany and Japan with built in light meters and even some with early forms of auto-exposure.

About Argus Cameras   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Argus, and its famous Model C3 35mm camera, has had considerable historical influence on the photographic industry.
It was manufactured in 1938 and was the first of the distinctively shaped, square-cornered, range finder cameras which were popularly referred to as the "Brick." The Argus Model C3, also of the "Brick" design, followed in 1939 and remained the best-selling 35mm camera in the world for almost three decades.
Argus has produced many different camera models over the years and even expanded into movie cameras, movie projectors, and 35mm slide projectors.

Argus C3 (aka - the Brick), 35mm rangefinder camera, c1939+
The Argus C2 and C3 are often referred to as the "Brick", a sobriquet earned largely due to it's, to put it politely, linear styling and significantly reinforced by its not inconsiderable weight.
The C3 shares the same sprocket system as the earlier Argus A and like the A series enjoyed a long production run, remaining largely unchanged from 1939 to 1966.

Argus goofed when they tried to "automate" the camera, as the numbers are meaningless without the manual, especially if the selenium meter isn't working.

Not inherently different in image quality from the C3, sharing the same body and lens (where would be the difference, then?) The Matchmatic of course had a selenium meter mounted on an accessory shoe, by which you would derive a number to correspond to the correct exposure.
Argus also made the same style meter calibrated for the f/ stop - shutter speed system.
I mean it is the most sold camera from 1939 to 1966, and is supposed to be the main reason we all shoot with the 35mm format.
