Arhat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In early Indian texts such as the Pali Canon, the stage of arhat is described as the final goal of Buddhist practice -- the attainment of complete and unexcelled Nirvāna.
In Jainism, the term arhat (or arihant) is a synonym for Jina or Tirthankara.
The concept of arhat may also be compared with that of bodhisattva.

LankaLibrary.com: The arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka
Arhat Mahinda, the profoundly sapient thera, came to Sri Lanka as bidden by his father, the emperor Asoka (264-267 BC) of India, who was earlier known as Chandasoka (Asoka the wicked), but later, when he renounced armed conquests, he came to be known as Dharmasoka (Asoka the pious).
However, Arhat Mahinda postponed his mission to Sri Lanka until the time was appropriate for him to undertake the mission, as the then king Mutasiva (367-307 BC), was too old and feeble to understand the doctrine of the Buddha.
When King Devanampiyatissa inquired from Arhat Mahinda, whether the Buddha Sasana had been well established in the island, the reply was that it would happen only when a person of the Sinhalese race studies the vinaya (code of discipline) and expounds it clearly and explicitly.

The state of an arhat is considered in the Theravada tradition to be the proper goal of a Buddhist.

Though the Theravadin arhat naturally “took refuge in the Buddha,”; his emphasis was not on the grace of the Saviour but on his dhamma.

Not all agree on the origins of this grouping of 500 Arhats, although in Japanese artwork they appear rather frequently in the 12th and 13th century, especially the 100 kakemono paintings reportedly brought to Japan from China by the Japanese monk Eisai in the 12th century (now located at Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto).
Juuroku Rakan literally means "Sixteen Arhats." The saintly ascetics who gathered at the death and nirvana (nehan 涅槃) of the Buddha Sakyamuni (Shaka 釈迦) and were ordered by him to remain in this world as witnesses to the truth of the Law or Buddhist teachings.
Paintings of the Sixteen arhats are known to date from the Tang dynasty and were produced frequently in China through the Song period (12c), typically as wall paintings or sets of hanging scrolls.

 SUICIDE AND BUDDHISM
In saying that Channa was not an arhat until the point of death those who suggest that suicide is wrong for a non-arhat would have to accept that Channa was wrong to commit the act.
We have arrived at the point where the conclusion that suicide by an arhat is acceptable to Buddhism has become unjustifiable with regards to the teachings of the Buddha as reported in the Pali Canon.
The prime example of an arhat committing suicide (Channa) turns out to be not the suicide of an arhat, but instead the actions of an unenlightened man who can stand the pain of life no more.
