In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

Ari Up   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Ari (short for Ariana) Forster was born to be a punk diva: her mother Nora was a friend of Jimi Hendrix and Chris Spedding's girlfriend for three years (Spedding was heard to complain about the difficulties of writing songs with Nora's twelve-year-old daughter practicing the piano in the next room).
Ari was only fourteen when the Slits first got together; Palmolive and Kate Korus had met her at a Patti Smith concert and invited her to the band's lead singer.
Ari was the most flamboyant member of the group, with her wild, teased mane of hair and her wacky outfits: one of her favorites consisted of Silver Jubilee underwear worn over shiny skin-tight trousers with a studded belt and short cowboy boots; another was a crotch-high mini-skirt worn with rosebud printed underwear underneath.

 www.jammyland.com - ARi-UP - bio
All the remarkable life experience and idiosyncratic phases of Ari's colorful existence are captured in her forceful solo material, like the sharply autobiographical tunes Baby Father and True Warrior, the anthemic Kill Them With Love and the eternal innocence of The World Of Grown-Ups.
Her remarkable life is an unpredictable saga that flows from the basement punk clubs of London, to the bashment dancehall sound system sessions of downtown Kingston, where she's a regular on local TV shows, known as Madusa, the sinuous deejay-dancer with the legendary Stone Love sound.
Ari's mother, the striking Nora, promoted Jimi Hendrix shows in Germany in the 1960s, and Ari was raised on the road in a milieu of raffish haute bohemia.

Ari Up - Biography - AOL Music
Ari Up was born Arianna Forster to a German mother in 1962 (John Lydon is her stepfather).
Up, however, also stepped out of the band format on several occasions, contributing percussion to Talking Heads' Fear of Music album and linking with producer Adrian Sherwood in the first manifestation of the New Age Steppers' post-punk super session.
The ensuing disc is nevertheless dominated by Up's distinctive vocals and, reinvigorated by the experience, she led the Slits through their Return of the Giant Slits swan song.

FREEwilliamsburg: Ari Up, Coughs, and Mahi Mahi Reviews
Ari has since become a beacon of inspiration for women in the arts worldwide and is an active supporter of emerging artists and new music movements everywhere.
On "Dread" Ari extends her dub reggae roots into dancehall and ragga territory, transforming the heavily male-dominated -- and often misogynist—style of Jamaican music into a platform for pointedly pro-family messages.
Ari's electronic production is minimal in construction — applying just a dash of rhythm guitar and modest helpings of synthesizer — but her beats and bass are big and beefy and aggressive enough to emasculate any competition and eradicate the ignorance dividing the sexes.

 Great Day for Up
The other Slits have largely given up music: Albertine, who recorded with Up in The New Age Steppers after The Slits broke up in 1981, is a producer with the BBC; Paloma McLardy (Palmolive’s real name) is a born-again who lives in Rhode Island and occasionally performs Slits songs with newly Christian lyrics.
For her Sugar Town performance at the Balcony, Up will probably leave the band behind (due to noise conflicts with the jazz mandolin show in the Troc the same night), but bring backing tapes and backing singers for an event that she says "is not just a performing show; it’s like a party.
Oddly enough, Up admits that she herself didn’t really become a Slits fan until several years ago, when she had to re-learn several old songs to teach them to her new band.

When Ari arrives, she is with Andrea Oliver (formerly of Rip Rig and Panic, and related to Tess through her brother, Sean Oliver).
Ari: “You know, that girl is only fourteen and she seems so mature, she looks and talks about eighteen.
Ari: In one way it has, but in another way, there are other outlets, there were other crazy people who came out and were able to be women like no other way before, and there are now girl groups playing, there are more outlets for women.

Montreal Mirror : Music : Ari Up
With a new solo album, an impending Slits reunion and a celebrated dancehall persona on the side, Ari Up is the mistress of her domain, but as a wounded veteran of England's punk avant-garde, she knows the rise-and-fall routine well.
With her husband and their young twins in tow, Ari Up escaped, not just from the dire music scenes and the depressed cities they thrived in, but from civilization altogether.
Now living with her youngest son between Kingston and Brooklyn, "world citizen" Ari Up is relieved to be back on the road with her band the True Warriors, supporting her rebel dancehall LP, More Dread Dan Dead.

 Variety.com - Reviews - The Slits
Ari Up, lead singer for first-generation punk band the Slits, looked absolutely thrilled to be playing the Troubadour on Friday night, a broad grin practically pasted to her face.
The band members enjoyed playing it so much, they immediately reprised it, bringing members of the aud (most not even born when the band was active) onstage to sing along.
With bands as self-consciously primitive as the Slits, there's always a danger that as they become more competent musicians, it becomes apparent that their appeal was their lack of proficiency.

Adrenaline-wired Ari Up comes roaring back from the jungle | Straight.com Vancouver
Up was 15 years old when the Slits joined the Clash on its fabled White Riot Tour.
With that, speaking in an accent that is part German, part Kingston patois, and occasionally South London, Up launches into a mostly uninterrupted 20-minute demonstration of her gale-force personality.
The only sad thing about this is that it leaves much of her extraordinary life undiscussed: her time spent living naked in the jungles of Belize, her career as a DJ in Jamaica, or whether or not she calls John Lydon “dad”.

The Slits - Ari Up Interview 2006
Ari: Oh, it’s not the band, but we have problems with organizing anything, getting things done, like you wouldn’t believe.
Ari: We need to have The Slits’ unfinished mission accomplished, there has been this whole legend coming out of us it’s now become mythology, which is good, you know, it’s coming around, because the Riot Girrl movement helped that in the 1990s, you know the American girls, helped bring that about.
Ari: Yeah, it’s not like a sell-out, commercial record, not like we went and made some massively over-produced album.

Live at the Gibus Club - The Slits - Song Listings
It's the original lineup of the Slits -- Ari Up on vocals, Viv Albertine on guitar, Tessa Pollitt on bass, and Palmolive (who would leave before the Slits' first album, and later join the Raincoats) -- well in advance of the release of the group's first LP in 1979.
Instead, it's tumbling, lumpy tempoed, similar-sounding rants with proto-hardcore anthemic choruses, with Up's vocals so howled that the words are difficult to make out (admittedly a trait shared by many an early punk recording).
What are you doing up here anyway, you asshole?...Go to the bog and have a wank!" Early British punk insider (and, briefly, Slits manager) Don Letts contributes entertaining liner notes about the group's early days.
