Whilst Ariadne is given long-breathed, soaring phrases, Zerbinetta has some of the most difficult music ever written for a high coloratura, culminating in a showpiece aria, Grossmächtige Prinzessin, filled with trills and cadenzas and reaching up to a high F sharp.

As the last of the German Romantics, and perhaps because of his unwillingness--or fear--to resist the Nazis (interestingly, his daughter married a Jew after the World War II), Strauss has been denigrated as a cultural relic and egotist rather than acknowledged as a creative force.
However, if we separate the mortal man from his work, Strauss emerges as a fireball of constant melodic inventiveness wrapped in an intellect that should not be underestimated.
Ariadne, ostensibly a comedy, but perhaps something much deeper, relates the story of the Grecian beauty abandoned by her lover Theseus, spun by a Viennese composer forced not only to shorten his work, but to share the stage with a commedia dell' arte troupe eager to poke fun at the foibles of love.

This is a difficult piece to navigate, with many musical affectations: the overblown, artsy rhetoric of the Composer, the zany antics of Zerbinetta and her troupe, and the "opera within an opera" world of Ariadne and Bacchus.
For Ariadne to make real sense, these sound worlds must be distinct from one another, but still integrated in a consistent whole — and the ability to do this was Sinopoli's genius.
She can stretch a phrase without damaging it, and though she is a star in every sense, her performance calls all attention to the music rather than to her own considerable talents.

Given its final version in 1916, Ariadne auf Naxos abandons the excess of Salome and Electra, orienting itself toward neoclassicism in its juxtaposition of the world of antique opera seria with that of the commedia dell'arte.

The result - the opera company’s version of the mythological tale of Ariadne with improvisation provided by the comedy troupe - is a blend of breathtaking vocal technique and farcelike antics, of high opera and physical comedy.

Rita Streich's uniquely styled polish and sweet purity of tone make her one of Zerbinetta's most memorable exponents, while Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's Ariadne (surprisingly, a role she never sang on stage) abounds in vocal splendor and cuts through the inherent abstractness of the character with dramatic insight.

The second is that although Schwarzkopf is very fine there are still moments when she is Schwarzkopf and not Ariadne (veiled tone and other typical S-kopf devices which became increasingly pronounced later in her career and in my humble opinion detract from the purity of vocal line).
